The New House... #6: Kitchen Nightmares - No, not the Gordon Ramsay kind...

1 day ago by ryno101 | 3 comments »

Well, it’s official, we’ve moved. This past Friday was the move day, and despite last minute issues, (the contractor who was dealing with the upstairs bathroom decided that he didn’t want to show up to finish the job, the company who we got the vanity from gave us totally inaccurate rough plumbing specs which required a complete re-do of the plumbing, etc. etc. etc… all will be revealed in coming blogs!) we were living in the house. There’s still enough to do t...

New house building project #5: Hall Closet

2 days ago by PaBull | 5 comments »

I am working on a wall closet in a hallway which will be our main entrance for “regular” traffic. The wall unit needs to hold all out home school books, shoes, coats (should not be too many and not too long around here). The closet is 135” long and 113” tall. The face frame is one unit and assembled on the spot.

Kitchen remodel #8: Sad news and no real progress lately

2 days ago by 3fingerpat | 8 comments »

Okay, it has been a while since the last update so let me get everyone up to date. My contractor’s father passed away unexpectedly. This was a great loss for all of us as we knew him well, he was a grand old English Gentlemen. The service was a beautiful celebration of his life which helped to medigate our sadness at his passing. So needless to say our friends loss is obviously more important then anything in my kitchen, we can wait as long as needed before she can come back to work...

Halloween Challenge with Lee Valley #3: Announcement

9 days ago by mbulla | 7 comments »

Hi all you Refurbers, we know that you must be very busy with your home renovations. Renovating can take up a lot of time, for this reason we had only two entries in the Haloween Challenge. We discussed the small turnout with our two contestants and with our sponsor Lee Valley and decided it would be best to call it a day on this one. We would like to thank out contestants for their entries and would also like to thank Lee Valley for sponsoring the event. Keep an eye out for our winter Awa...

The New House... #5: A brief update...

11 days ago by ryno101 | 2 comments »

I’ve been lax in posting, but for good reason. I’ve been putting in 14-16 hour days, 7 days a week since I started this project on 10/18… I was able to take last week off from work, allowing me to get into a rhythm of work from 10am to 2am, sleep from 3am to 9am… Of course on the days where I did have to work at my real job, it was office from 8am to 6pm, house from 7pm to 1am. The biggest time chunk that I wish I had back was the hours upon hours of driving all ...

Conserving Heat

19 days ago by MsDebbieP | 10 comments »

November 2, 2008 Last year, I put in a beautiful little propane stove (fireplace) in my living room and it was WONDERFUL. A great investment. It heats most of our downstairs and last year it probably saved us about $500 in heating bills (or there about). The layout of my house doesn’t allow us to close off any rooms in order to save on heating bills, other than my beloved porch which gets REALLY cold in the winter and fortunately has two access doors to the rest of the house and I...

The New House... #4: Ripping out the kitchen

21 days ago by ryno101 | 5 comments »

I’m posting as I have a free 20 minutes to compile these, so my timeline is a bit scattered… I’m well into other stuff, but I’m trying to make sure I get the big stuff documented here, so I’m really like a week or so ahead in the project, this was last weekend’s adventure. My two biggest “projects” inside this giant project…. are the painting/wall prep and re-doing the kitchen. The kitchen was by far the nastiest room in the house...

The New House... #3: Progress... I hate wallpaper!

25 days ago by ryno101 | 8 comments »

So, I’ve been working at this for two weekends and one week of after work time. I’m leaving to go to work at 6:30am, working until 6pm, then driving an hour to get to the new house, working until midnight or so, wash, rinse, repeat. First thing I did was pull the mom-mobile (our minivan, which I have co-opted for the duration of this project!) up to my workshop and load it all in. I’m one of those guys who needs to be organized, and I figure that my first step would be ...
