Exterior Fix-its #2: Storm Door's Installed

25 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 8 comments »

Finally got to doing more with the front door this weekend and got the storm door installed. It’s a really nice Pella 8500 Roll Screen in Cranberry with Oil Rubbed Bronze hardware. The day before the install I patched the rotted sections of the door jamb, which I’d dug out much earlier to solid wood.. I used the fiberglass resin + sawdust method, followed by autobody filler. It worked GREAT and is as solid as a patch that ever was. Plus I never have to worry about it rotting ou...

Time to get busy on that garage conversion again! Our new baby girl is here and I’ve got the next two weeks off to help out at the house with mommy and baby. I was 60% done before now, so the rest should come together pretty quickly. Of course, you’re all probably more interested in seeing our newest addition! Head over to the Gradin.com blog to see the news.

Cedar Closets #1: Destruction and construction

36 days ago by Dan Lyke | 2 comments »

Just lining our closets with cedar, to make sure we don’t have moth issues, and splitting one closet into two, with an additional door into the hallway. Yes, we’re making sure that there’s still a full plasterboard firewall between the hall and the bedroom closet. Destruction and reconstruction in the hallway: And one of the closet with most of the paneling in and the hanger rod back in place, the new hanger rod is maple, the trim is birch:

The New House... #2: Closing is scheduled...

36 days ago by ryno101 | 1 comment »

Got word today from our mortgage broker, and in the interest of getting this done ASAP, we’ve moved up the closing date to Friday! This is great, not only because I can’t wait to be the proud owner of a new place, but also because it almost doubles the window of time I have to be able to complete all that needs to be done. I’ll be getting in as soon as this weekend to start working. First steps will probably be trash removal and some small demo work. I’ll hope ...

What is that smell?

37 days ago by MsDebbieP | 5 comments »

October 15, 2008 A couple of months ago I brought an antique china cabinet upstairs from my basement. It was old, rickety, and definitely musty. The china cabinet had been my Mom & Dad’s and is around 50 years old. My Mom says that it was just a cheap thing that they had purchased long ago. I’ve carried it with me from home to home for the past 25 years and it had ended up “tossed” in the basement. Today, it is a wonderful piece that I am proud to have in my hom...

The New House... #1: We're moving!

41 days ago by ryno101 | 5 comments »

So, I mentioned I’d be starting a bunch of new projects soon… Well, I heard today that our mortgage is going through! Yes, even despite the current “Credit Crisis” it looks like we’ve gotten ours through, which was the last hurdle. The new house is on 1/3 of an acre, it’s about 1500 Sq. Feet. Here’s the front: It needs a TON of work. the last two owners both lost the house to foreclosure, (you’d think that the first bank that had to for...

Garage Conversion #2: Subfloor Paneling

42 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 0 comments »

I’ve recently finished one half of the 21’ subfloor I’m building. I’m out of joists, so I’ll need to buy more before continuing. In the meantime, I figured I would go ahead and lay paneling where I could as the leveled joists over the concrete floor are making it increasingly more difficult to walk. I tacked down a few rows of insulation and already have the vapor barrier purchased and ready to go. As soon as I can get out to the store, I’ll be purchasi...

Garage Conversion #1: Additions to the Household

45 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 3 comments »

In just a few weeks, we’ll have a new baby girl to bring into our shrinking home. In just a few weeks, I hope to have added a recreation / office room to our house to compensate. I’m using my two-car garage and cutting it half such that a car would not fit within its depth. The outer half will be my workshop while the inner half will be a playroom. My task is not, on the surface, too difficult save for the fact that I’ve never done this kind of work before and I’m ...

Kitchen remodel #7: Backsplash and a little more...

47 days ago by 3fingerpat | 3 comments »

Well, it has been a while and slowly but surely I have gotten a few more things accomplished. I was able to install, grout and seal the tile backsplash above the counters. I had to stop just past the sink because the wall is not plumb, (gotta love these old houses) so the contractor will be fixing that in Nov for us and then I will be able to finish that portion of the remodel. I have primed the wood trim; which will fit in the space btwn the backsplash tiles the wall and bottom of the...
