Exterior Fix-its #1: Front Door Repair Begins.

48 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 1 comment »

Well.. Figured I’d hung out over at GardenTenders enough and thought I’d get to actually posting about the homestead. I’ve got quite a few projects to take care of outside the home, well, besides the garden. To start off I thought I’d tackle replacing the rot around the front door and fixing the water issue. It seems somewhere along the lines the prior owners decided to have aluminum installed over all the exterior trim. I despise this practice for several reason...

Front Door Trim #4: Ipe threshold

60 days ago by Dan Lyke | 10 comments »

With the coming of fall weather, the gap underneath the door finally got annoying to the point where I milled a new threshold out of Ipe and installed it. Lessons learned: 1. Despite how hard and dense it is, Ipe actually mills fairly easily. 2. The sawdust stinks, spreads a green (despite the nice color of the wood) dust over everything, and hangs in the air. Definitely open the shop doors and use a respirator. 3. No matter how nicely you prep your work area, if you do finishi...

Kitchen Remodel #1: The first cabinets installed in the kitchen

62 days ago by Karson | 6 comments »

I just installed the first cabinets for the kitchen in Delaware. Old Picture. You can see my Greene and Greene Thorsten table that was entered in a LumberJock challenge. New picture. The counter top is from the old cabinet. i plan to put down Corian. I’m doing it myself so I’ll do some fill-in first until I get the shop emptied a little. I built one upper cabinet and one lower cabinet. A lot of other wood has been cut and the pieces needing veneer have been mostly ...

Kitchen remodel #6: New Kitchen Floor Installed

67 days ago by 3fingerpat | 8 comments »

The contractor removed the old floor tiles and installed the new floor tiles while I was out of town on a business trip. It was nice not having to deal with the noise and the disruption but I had a lot of work to do to get the room ready by removing all the stuff from the kitchen, not a lot of fun.The new floor turned out fine but the grout color does not match what we selected, bummer! The grout is gray but we wanted a light tan color, the installed grout doesn’t match the color palate...

New house building project #4: Glass doors for the 6 medicine cabinets

75 days ago by PaBull | 9 comments »

Today I was busy making the glass doors for the medicine cabinets for all the bathrooms in the house. I thought I might as well share the fun with you guys. First thing I had to do after I cut the styles and rails, was make a jig to do the coping on the router table. My router table is build in with the table saw, very basic. Here some pictures of that jig. The pictures are not the best, I took them with my PDA, sorry. The jig rides against the edge of the table. Now here...

Camp #1: A bit of history is in order

78 days ago by fredf | 7 comments »

When my parents were first married, they lived on the farm with my grandparents for several years. In the summer they would camp in the lower pasture, by a stream bordering my grandfather’s property for a bit more privacy. When I was born, they bought a chicken coop from my grandfather and moved that to the property to use as a camp. When my dad died I was 3 or 4. They where no longer living at the farm as my dad had taken a job 40 or 50 miles toward the coast. My mother had a 16×24’...

mitre saw bench

79 days ago by MRTRIM | 6 comments »

this is my saw bench that i drag out to the jobsite . its all alluminum . i used to build them in wood which cost about 50.00 for the wood . they sometimes get wet and the wood eventually gets tristed and warped , making your cuts slightly off . i decided to try this about 8 yrs ago , and have been quite pleased with it . its slightly heavier than the wood ones but i consider it worth it in the long haul its all welded together except the fence which i used screws in case it ever ...

Kitchen remodel #5: Have saw, will tile

80 days ago by 3fingerpat | 3 comments »

Received the new wet tile saw from Amazon, several days sooner than expected. The new saw works great and is extremely easy to setup and use, just like it was advertised. I continued installing the small tiles above the back splash as far as I could go. The remaining portion of the wall is not plumb and needs to be refloated. I met with the contractor this morning and she won’t be back until around Nov to do the walls and ceiling. Kinda long from now but she is a dear friend who ha...
