Garage Remodel #3: Simply Done

150 days ago by Patrick Jaromin | 2 comments »

I had higher hopes for the finished room—some custom cabinetry and perhaps some painted details—but in the end, I settled for “neat, organized and finished.” On a friend’s suggestion I hacked off the lower two cabinets from an old built-in desk unit that was in the basement (and before that in the previous homeowner’s kitchen) and mounted it at counter height along the back wall to act as a planting station for my wife. I bought a Rubbermaid hanging organiz...

Building a porch. #2: Under construction finally!

162 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 8 comments »

Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it. The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long, because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread. Whoever built it, they poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls, The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab. there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each. There was nothing holding up the 6 foot length along t...

New house building project #1: Our new house week #23

166 days ago by PaBull | 1 comment »

So, we finally got some work done around the new house this week. We are watching the finances (business is not the greatest this year) and this slows us down a bit. A couple of weeks ago we did get our final, so now the push is to get the house livable. Outside we are grading 12” off the top of the yard and we will backfill this with good soil. Our yard is DG, you can not get a shovel in the ground. the garage is still a mess, everytime i do a little project, i need w...

I am adding a workshop in the back part of my garage. The shop in about 15×40. I have added a bathroom, storage room and have just installed doors and heater. I have the sink/toilet/shower just completed. I plan on doing an Acid Stain to the concrete. I haven’t done Acid Staining before but look forward to the challenge. Will keep updates coming. Master Bedroom Floor

184 days ago by dustynewt | 3 comments »

The house sustained minor damage from wind and water during the hurricanes of the last few years. The outside is now sufficiently repaired. We are finally getting to the task of remodeling the inside. We have been living on the first floor of our house for what seems like years while we remodel the upstairs. It suffered the worst. The plan is to do the reverse when the upstairs is finished. Between work and unexpected projects (neccessities) the remodel is coming slow. We either have the m...

Building a porch. #1: Building a porch with my own SketchUp plan

188 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 6 comments »

I’ve been really busy trying to learn SketchUp. My Son needs a new front porch on his home. I decided this would be a good way to learn SketchUp. His old concrete steps have been gradually leaning, & it makes the whole house seem crooked. He said if he sits on a step, he feels like he’s going to fall off. This was quite an experience for me, because I’ve used a T-square, & triangles for so long. This project took me an awfully long time, but I learn...

Garage Remodel #2: A Fresh Coat of Many Colors (of Paint)

188 days ago by Patrick Jaromin | 4 comments »

This past weekend, Mother’s Day weekend, I gave my wife what every mother wants: a silver “mother and family” necklace and a freshly-painted garage!MixologyOriginally I was planning on heading out to HD and buying a gallon or so of “oops” paint (ya know, the stuff that they mix by mistake and sell dirt cheap) for the walls. But then, a woodworker/remodeller friend of mine suggested a better approach. He keeps a 5 gallon bucket that he uses for all of his left ove...

Front Door Trim #3: Making an entrance

190 days ago by Dan Lyke | 2 comments »

It’s gonna be hotter than the hinges of Hades today, so I went out this morning and finished up the porch rails. Project page coming, but I want to take a few more pictures with different light.

Front Porch Job

190 days ago by dustynewt | 3 comments »

I posted this blog on LumberJocks about seven months ago. I had to edit it to restore photos (I have changed my photo host) so while I was at it, I thought I would post it here for my first HomeReburbers blog. The first major problem (project) started when I walked out the front door of my house one day and my foot went right through the slate porch. It shocked me more than anything because I thought the slate was bedded with a solid concrete pad. We have lived here for 25 years. I have al...
