With the coming of fall weather, the gap underneath the door finally got annoying to the point where I milled a new threshold out of Ipe and installed it. Lessons learned:
1. Despite how hard and dense it is, Ipe actually mills fairly easily.
2. The sawdust stinks, spreads a green (despite the nice color of the wood) dust over everything, and hangs in the air. Definitely open the shop doors and use a respirator.
3. No matter how nicely you prep your work area, if you do finishi...

Before I hear all the screams I might add that if this where a “real” kitchen the owners would probably have never wanted it painted. I have two thoughts on kitchens. Prefabs are often junk and custom is often over kill. This kitchen is in the junk category. The install was fair but the design just inhaled large volumes of air….anyway many times lowest bit is also a hurried piece of junk. Did I tell you the house and garden are very nice. In a beautiful neighborhood. I’...

I have not been on the site much lately, but I do have a good excuse. I finally found a house to purchase a refurbish. While not a lot of work to do, there will be a few things needing done, primarily patching a few holes and painting.
In April I looked through a number of houses. Many of these houses, while inexpensive, were not in good areas and/or needed a lot of work. By the time the house was fixed up, there would be no money to be made. With a declining housing market, that woul...

Someone asked the question if I was going to treat the wood that I used on the posts.
That was something that I forgot, and i was planning to write about when I made the posts and enches.
When I was at the big orange home supply center I saw some new treated wood. It’s by Thompson’s, its called Thompsonized wood
The wood was not the normal green treated wood. It’s more of a natural color wood treatment.
This post is treated wood.
The price is about the sam...

I was taking a building codes class a year ago or so and we got on the subject of crawl space insulation. According to the building codes in my neck of the woods they require insulation between non-conditioned air and living spaces. So as I was going to do this in my older house one person told me not to do that. He had said that with a crawlspace that has a moisture issue that it could lead to rotting of my floors. Has anyone else heard this or is this just some bull?

this is my saw bench that i drag out to the jobsite . its all alluminum . i used to build them in wood which cost about 50.00 for the wood . they sometimes get wet and the wood eventually gets tristed and warped , making your cuts slightly off . i decided to try this about 8 yrs ago , and have been quite pleased with it . its slightly heavier than the wood ones but i consider it worth it in the long haul
its all welded together except the fence which i used screws in case it ever ...

Well today I got to working on the second bench.
I assembled it and brought it over to the deck and trimmed up the straight bench and the curved bench so that they fit in the corner of the deck.
I then went and got the trim router with a 1/4” roundover (got to make it kid friendly) and a sander to get rid of the saw marks, saw cuts and roundover where the trim router won’t reach.
I did the edges on both surfaces of the benches and sanded both of them.
Here are ...

Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it.
The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long,
because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread.
Whoever built it, they poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls,
The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab.
there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each.
There was nothing holding up the 6 foot length along t...
