Last year, I put in a beautiful little propane stove (fireplace) in my living room and it was WONDERFUL. A great investment. It heats most of our downstairs and last year it probably saved us about $500 in heating bills (or there about).
The layout of my house doesn’t allow us to close off any rooms in order to save on heating bills, other than my beloved porch which gets REALLY cold in the winter and fortunately has two access doors to the rest of the house and I...

Last week, some door to door sales guys came by pitching replacement windows. I thought “this ought to be fun”, and scheduled an appointment. Surprisingly, they seemed to have a darned good deal, 6 Anlin windows, including a monster picture window, for $3200 installed. Poking around gave us a fairly good impression of Anlin windows relative to various other premium vinyl windows (ie: Milgard, etc), but as we dug further we started to think that vinyl wasn’t a look we liked.

Hello. I am new to this site. It looks very interesting and great ideas!!! I have knotty pine in my basement. Literaly everywhere. The walls, the doors and the closets are all knotty pine. My house upstairs is very modern. I would like to also make the basement more modern. I have considered stripping the walls and than restaining but I don’t have a ton of time and the basement is huge. I also don’t want to commit to the amount of money it would cost to contract it out. So I am...

Hi all you Refurbers, we know that you must be very busy with your home renovations. Renovating can take up a lot of time, for this reason we had only two entries in the Haloween Challenge. We discussed the small turnout with our two contestants and with our sponsor Lee Valley and decided it would be best to call it a day on this one. We would like to thank out contestants for their entries and would also like to thank Lee Valley for sponsoring the event. Keep an eye out for our winter Awa...

I am working on a wall closet in a hallway which will be our main entrance for “regular” traffic. The wall unit needs to hold all out home school books, shoes, coats (should not be too many and not too long around here). The closet is 135” long and 113” tall. The face frame is one unit and assembled on the spot.

We’d like to share a few pictures of our backyard this morning.
I walked around the block today, & took some pictures of our van.
I haven’t seen it since last Saturday. We’ve been sticking close to home.

I had higher hopes for the finished room—some custom cabinetry and perhaps some painted details—but in the end, I settled for “neat, organized and finished.” On a friend’s suggestion I hacked off the lower two cabinets from an old built-in desk unit that was in the basement (and before that in the previous homeowner’s kitchen) and mounted it at counter height along the back wall to act as a planting station for my wife. I bought a Rubbermaid hanging organiz...

Now that the shop is pretty much complete and the weather’s turned a bit more spring-like, I’ve decided to tackle the garage. Since I no longer need it for woodworking, save the odd large-piece assembly, we’re going to revert the space back to a more traditional use: car, bike and outdoor-kid-toy-storage. In addition, we’ll be adding a workspace and storage for gardening tools andn supplies. I also plan to repaint the floor…hopefully this time it’ll last a ...

I’m kind of working backward, because you usually put the skirting on last,
but I didn’t have the 2’ X 6” material for the railing balusters yet, so that’s why I went this route.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I didn’t want to rely on the bolts alone to hold up the deck,
so I rabbeted a 4” x 4” to rap around the metal post.
