Cape Cod in Portland #3: backyard fence

173 days ago by freitag | 1 comment »

The first thing I did immediately after moving in was to build a 6’ cedar fence around the backyard to make sure our dog could not get out. Here’s a before picture of the garage. After the perimeter of the yard was fenced I also enclosed the area behind the garage to make a dog run with dog door access to the garage. As you can see, he was letting everyone know this was his yard. This was a pretty quick build with the help of my dad and brother. It took about tw...

New Windows #1: A false start

174 days ago by Dan Lyke | 5 comments »

Last week, some door to door sales guys came by pitching replacement windows. I thought “this ought to be fun”, and scheduled an appointment. Surprisingly, they seemed to have a darned good deal, 6 Anlin windows, including a monster picture window, for $3200 installed. Poking around gave us a fairly good impression of Anlin windows relative to various other premium vinyl windows (ie: Milgard, etc), but as we dug further we started to think that vinyl wasn’t a look we liked. ...

Reclaiming Mahogany for Baseboards #3: Decisions, decisions

174 days ago by Dan Lyke | 1 comment »

Took the weekend off to go buy lunch for a starving college student, and drive 3 hours each way for a school play that one of the kids who shows up occasionally in our lives was involved in. But now I’m back, and though work seems like it’ll be a little heavier this week, I still want to push forward. However, that means no pictures and no progress to report. Thanks to some help from fellow home refurber MRTRIM, I think I’ve got a clearer view of how to fit these thing...

Reclaiming Mahogany for Baseboards #2: Milling

178 days ago by Dan Lyke | 5 comments »

Yesterday I ripped the boards down to 4” wide, the widest I felt that I could reasonably get out of the lumber, and started to mill it into shape. Charlene and I ran it through the planer to take a whisker off and bring it down to 5/8”, cut a 3/8” diameter quarter round on the top in two passes, the first left to right to take off most of the stock, the final cut was a climb cut so I could end up with a smoother surface. Then we started sanding, 320 grit with the sand...

Crawl Space Insulation

178 days ago by Huckleberry | 9 comments »

I was taking a building codes class a year ago or so and we got on the subject of crawl space insulation. According to the building codes in my neck of the woods they require insulation between non-conditioned air and living spaces. So as I was going to do this in my older house one person told me not to do that. He had said that with a crawlspace that has a moisture issue that it could lead to rotting of my floors. Has anyone else heard this or is this just some bull?

Reclaiming Mahogany for Baseboards #1: Breaking down the beams

179 days ago by Dan Lyke | 8 comments »

We picked up a bunch of Peruvian mahogany box beams off of Craigslist. They’ve been sitting in the attic, waiting for that task to come up on the queue. It did. Ow, do my hands hurt, both from all the splinters and cuts, and from gripping the pliers to pull those nails. There are a few nails in there yet, so I’m going to have to be very careful as I fire up the router, but left to be done is to select some of the thicker boards from the narrow stacks, cut them to 4R...

Stuff & things :

It is said that PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT That is actually a misnomer, being that it is a half truth at best. In reality practice makes perfect only when you practice aright. As this site is geared towards home improvements and the like , I thought that the following might be of some value in the long run. 1. One known fact is that INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE IN THE BUSINESS TO COLLECT…..NOT PAY . 2. Another, is in the fact that a great many have an aversion to drag a bu...
