Our new old apartment #2: Let's start refurbishing

11-12-2010 06:45 PM by mbulla | 8 comments »

Ok, I get a break with refurbishing so finally I have some free time. Since we spent most of our money on buying the apartment, we decided to refurbish only one room and make create entry way through a wall from kitchen to living room. We decided to refurbish one bedroom. It’s always good to have at least one room nicely refurbished so you can live in new place. First we removed old paintings from all walls. Since the walls were really crooked, it was necessary to put new polishe...

Bending flashing without a brake

03-13-2012 10:57 PM by Craftsman on the Lake | 7 comments »

This is a simple video that will show how I bend flashing for a small job. A brake is nice but if you don’t bend stuff much then having one is a luxury that isn’t needed much.

Transforming attic window into attic vent

09-30-2010 03:10 PM by Obernelson | 5 comments »

I have been on LumberJocks for awhile and when the CreativeHands News came out I noticed the HR Create and Share Challange – Windows Wonders, and having just completed the window replacement with a vent I figured I would share the experience. The window conversion project revolved around a house built in 1793 and in a need of some new roof rafters, roof boards, new shingles and attic ventilation. The contractor doing the work told me that he would put in custom soffit vents in for a...

Ghost Doorbell Ringing Problem...

01-01-2015 03:00 PM by Mark | 15 comments »

Hi All - Attached is a video I made a couple of days ago showing my fun with a little doorbell project – we literally had the doorbell ringing every few days at dinnertime for no obvious reason. It was kind of funny in hindsight, really, as we all were starting to develop sort-of an anti-Pavlovian response: we were all starting to ignore the doorbell! (And occasionally, there were real people out there who would be like… “Didn’t you hear me ringing?”) In...

02-13-2017 07:41 PM by PawPawTex | 7 comments »

Had a tornado pass through here Jan. 15th. The score is Tornado-1, My woodshop-0. Sucks huh? And NO insurance. Still sorting things out. My neighbor lady next door set up a GoFundMe page to try and help. It’s been going slow so far. Here’s the link if anyone is interested. Thanks. https://www.gofundme.com/newshopforahero

Bathroom Remodel #6: Practicing for the shower doors

01-03-2015 08:03 PM by Dan Lyke | 157 comments »

So with the expanded window, we needed to obscure some of the glass. I thought “Oh, let’s go to Michael’s, get some stencils and etching acid, and put some patterns on it”. Charlene heard that and thought “Let’s put pictures of my favorite childhood camping spot on all the available glass”. Including the $700 shower doors. So now we’re practicing. A lot. Started with the Harbor Freight “air eraser”, which is ...

HR: Interviews #4: Dan Lyke

12-09-2010 12:40 PM by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

This interview is from the December 2010 issue of CreativeHands News. I’d like to thank Dan Lyke taking the time to answer the following questions. 1. Not everyone is a handyman when it comes to fixing up houses, how did you first get started at refurbishing rooms/ homes? When I was 6, in a fit of ‘70s back-to-the-land hippiedom (or as close to hippiedom as my fairly square parents ever got to), my parents bought a house in upstate New York that was built somewhere around 1...
