Building a new deck #1: The Start

04-23-2008 04:49 AM by Karson | 3 comments »

Well I was working on building the deck and I kept saying. Take some pictures. But, it didn’t get done. These pictures are from before putting on the deck surface. The deck is placed just outside a small deck that goes between the screened porch and the Solarium. We have a spa in the Solarium room. The deck is basically 16’ X 16’. It’s 14 feet to the beginning of the curved edge. One end is tapered to match the sidewalk that goes around the house. I’...

Your Decking Material Options: Pros and Cons

05-04-2011 08:00 PM by Mike Blank, CGR CAPS | 2 comments »

We have been building wood, composite and solid PVC decks and screened porches here in Lancaster County, PA since 1999. With over 12 years experience I can tell you the decision most families struggle with is what kind of decking material to choose for their new deck? If initial cost were the only concern, the answer would always be simple: wood. Unfortunately, we must consider many important factors. Along with initial cost, the appearance you are looking for and long-term maintenance tim...

Building a new deck #7: The first bench is done

05-02-2008 02:56 AM by Karson | 3 comments »

Well is was a good day for working outside. A little cloudy, a little sunny, a few drizzles, but nothing to make it unbearable. I failed to take pictures of the straight bench being made, but, here it is. The seat is 14 1/2” wide (4 – 1X4’s) The straight bench was designed as 5’ long, but then trimmed to final fitting. So it’s a little longer as sitting here. The legs are 2X4’s 17” long with a 3” rail at top and bottom with 1 1/2”...

Thankless Home Maintenance Tasks or Just Blowing Air

08-19-2014 03:51 PM by ReubenD | 70 comments »

I like to think of myself as fairly competent with a hammer and a few power tools. Between the learning of necessity when much younger where tight budgets meant if I could not do a home project myself we did not get it done as a young family to these days when it has become something between a hobby and obsession to do my own home projects, I would rate my skills as above average. Sadly, my wife would be quick to point out that motivation and procrastination are areas I still need some im...

House Renovation #1: A Family and Friend Renovation

02-22-2011 02:05 AM by chief101 | 3 comments »

My first adventure in refurbishing was in 1974. I added a 17×27 addition to my ranch style home in Northfield Village, Ohio. I built it myself with the help of friends and a few issues of Time Do It Yourself magazines. These were very popular at the time and extremely helpful. The addition had a cathedral ceiling, main room 17×19, exposed beam, an 8×13 laundry room, in ceiling stereo speakers, and recessed lighting. One wall 17ft was an all split brick fireplace. Mason Bill Swa...

Refinishing the some of the house #1: Repainting the deck

10-27-2010 04:48 PM by PaBull | 3 comments »

We moved into our house about 2 years ago. I was hoping not to have to start with the maintenance this early. But the paint on deck of the porch it starting to peal up. The clear douglas fir is starting to crack etc. So I am starting to repaint the deck, every evening a little piece. Here you see the deck before I get started, you can see the bare wood in places. I used an oil based primer and a porch paint the first time around. On the picture below the top can. This time I am using a...
