10-27-2010 04:48 PM by PaBull | 3 comments »

I used an oil based primer and a porch paint the first time around. On the picture below the top can. This time I am using a...

Your Decking Material Options: Pros and Cons

05-04-2011 08:00 PM by Mike Blank, CGR CAPS | 2 comments »

We have been building wood, composite and solid PVC decks and screened porches here in Lancaster County, PA since 1999. With over 12 years experience I can tell you the decision most families struggle with is what kind of decking material to choose for their new deck? If initial cost were the only concern, the answer would always be simple: wood. Unfortunately, we must consider many important factors. Along with initial cost, the appearance you are looking for and long-term maintenance tim...

The Front of the House... #1: The New Front Porch...

04-06-2008 05:58 AM by Jcees | 12 comments »

If you’re an LJ, then you may have already caught a glimpse of this puppy in my projects on that site. I’ll do it this time as a blog and showoff some of the details and talk about the process just for you, MrTrim. I had to build the large archway twice! A wood boring bee decided to take up residence in the first one. I had made it out of WRC and the little bugger said, “Yummy!” So I rebuilt it out of SYP this time and put in a standing kill order for wood b...

House Renovation #1: A Family and Friend Renovation

02-22-2011 02:05 AM by chief101 | 3 comments »

My first adventure in refurbishing was in 1974. I added a 17×27 addition to my ranch style home in Northfield Village, Ohio. I built it myself with the help of friends and a few issues of Time Do It Yourself magazines. These were very popular at the time and extremely helpful. The addition had a cathedral ceiling, main room 17×19, exposed beam, an 8×13 laundry room, in ceiling stereo speakers, and recessed lighting. One wall 17ft was an all split brick fireplace. Mason Bill Swa...

Call before you dig this spring

04-09-2009 04:06 PM by DigSafely | 4 comments »

Thanks for letting me post here, Michal! I just wanted to remind all the handymen and women out there that April is National Safe Digging Month across the country. National Safe Digging Awareness Month is dedicated to informing gardeners and DIYers about the importance of calling 811 to have their buried utility lines marked before they dig. An underground utility line (think natural gas, cable, fiber optics) is accidentally struck once every TWO minutes in the U.S., and these accidents can c...

Building a new deck #1: The Start

04-23-2008 04:49 AM by Karson | 3 comments »

Well I was working on building the deck and I kept saying. Take some pictures. But, it didn’t get done. These pictures are from before putting on the deck surface. It’s 14 feet to the beginning of the curved edge. One end is tapered to match the sidewalk that goes around the house. I’...
