Tips for Designing and Finding Inspiration

09-14-2013 05:56 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 19 comments »

With the release of my latest article in WOOD magazine on design, it prompted more requests for a video on designing and how I find inspiration. In this video I share the lifestyle habits I have that allow me to keep finding inspiration, recording those ideas, and developing the designs. For an example, I share how I turned a Japanese torii gate into a stairwell barrier, bucking the standard design of newell posts, balusters, and handrail. While the subject of designing can get pretty d...

Turning Photographs into Wood Art

03-18-2013 01:06 PM by BonnieBartay | 141 comments »

Some of my favorite projects to do is turning photographs into wood art. Each piece is unique and has special characteristics that mean something special to the customer. Taking something that a customer loves and turning it into artwork preserves that thing along with the memories that surround it. Some of the most common request that I get for these types of custom projects are vehicles, pets, homes, etc. I enjoy creating these because each one is custom and there is not another like...

The Daughter of a Woodworker – My First Woodworking Experience

03-15-2013 02:53 PM by Chris Mobley | 2 comments »

My daughter wrote this article for my website and I thought I would share it with you all! Written By: Bonnie Bartay Some of my favorite memories as a young kid are spending time with my dad in his workshop. From a very young age, I remember playing in his shop while he worked. As an adult, I have helped my father with his construction business and now with Chris Mobley Designs. I do all of the paperwork part and even draw out plans but he does the real magic. I have never actually done...

An Unexpected Break from Woodworking

03-14-2013 01:34 PM by Chris Mobley | 1 comment »

I had an unusual experience yesterday that is leading me to take an unexpected break from woodworking. Now, I only expect this break to last a few days, so no need to worry. The strangest things seem to happen to me, and my immediate family for that matter, that I could not resist telling the story. Yesterday, I took my manual transmission work truck to get its state inspection done. Since I don’t drive it very often, I had been neglecting to get it done for quite some time. I took it to a...

Tools of the Trade - The Evolution of My Woodworking Tools

03-07-2013 02:42 PM by Chris Mobley | 46 comments »

Every wood worker has to start somewhere. My somewhere began with the purchase of a Shop Smith and this began the evolution of my woodworking tools. My mother and father had a friend that was selling their Shop Smith multi tool system back in the mid 1990’s and I was lucky enough to purchase it. This Shop Smith is perfect for doing small projects but not big construction jobs like I was used to. I decided that buying this system gave me a reason to put my creativeness to work and begin doing ...

Horses - Intarsia Woodworking

02-25-2013 02:00 PM by Chris Mobley | 1 comment »

Horses – Intarsia WoodworkingOne of my recent Intarsia projects is from a painting of horses. The client sent me a photograph of a painting hanging on their wall and requested an Intarsia piece from this photograph. I was very excited to start this one because I loved the picture they sent over. I started this project by cropping and enhancing this photograph on the computer. There is a few ways that I could have done this project. 1) Making the pieces follow the musculature of the horse’s...

Western Cross - Intarsia Woodworking

02-22-2013 01:36 PM by Chris Mobley | 0 comments »

The makings of this western cross happened by complete accident, but what a great gift it made for my wife. My daughter got a new computer aided design program. She was playing with it to learn all of the new things she could do and as she was playing she drew the design for this cross. I came to see her in her office and she was showing me her new program and some of the neat things that it could do when I noticed her drawing. I immediately thought of how great this would be to do in ...

Women don’t want a ‘cave’ downstairs… they want a ‘subterranean sanctuary’!

10-08-2010 08:30 PM by Mike Blank, CGR CAPS | 0 comments »

Yea, we’ve all heard about the ultimate ‘man cave’ finished basement. You know, the place where a man can drink beer and talk sports with his buddies on Sunday’s. But what about the ladies? They make up a large portion of homeowners and in most cases are the ones initiating remodeling projects in their homes. So, I wondered, what would their dream basement renovation consist of? I figured I’d go right to the source, so via LinkedIn I asked some Central PA women this very question. What did...

The Front of the House... #1: The New Front Porch...

04-06-2008 05:58 AM by Jcees | 12 comments »

If you’re an LJ, then you may have already caught a glimpse of this puppy in my projects on that site. I’ll do it this time as a blog and showoff some of the details and talk about the process just for you, MrTrim. I had to build the large archway twice! A wood boring bee decided to take up residence in the first one. I had made it out of WRC and the little bugger said, “Yummy!” So I rebuilt it out of SYP this time and put in a standing kill order for wood b...
