Just the beginning

02-02-2016 03:45 PM by KC_Kid | 7 comments »

A bit of background… We (my wife and I) purchased our first house together in march of 2015 knowing that we would not move in until June. I talked her into a fixer based on the fact that myself and a buddy worked our way through college working for our landlord fixing up his old rentals and also flipping houses for him. So we swooped in and got a fixer out from underneath a local flipper because he was trying to nickel and dime the seller. What made this a good purchase is that the e...

The Master #3: Peace

07-14-2013 08:39 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 84 comments »

I got up early and added some flooring then I weighted and waited. And weighted and waited. Then something broke loose and I was able to make a lot of good progress very quickly. I was simply laying floor and making cuts. The tools were just appearing in my hands. The glue slops were being cleaned. Weights were being distributed. Boards were being pre-inspected and sorted depending on the damage if any. New boards were coming in and being mixed in with the other boards. ...

The Master #2: Insanity

07-14-2013 01:41 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 1 comment »

There is a popular definition on insanity going around that had a bearing on me today. Forgive me please if you have heard it but: Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. I was laying my flooring in the Master bedroom. I took the time to carefully clean the floor, undercut the door jams, snap a line, cut a corner out for my sliding glass door, dry fit, glued, cleaned up, weighted and waited. Then I came back several hours later, snapped a line 3 ...

Little House in the Heights #3: Demo days

04-29-2013 10:43 PM by BillyJ | 4 comments »

The demolition continues in this segment, with the jack-hammer getting the best of me. Although I rarely get the chance to rejoice during demo, this time I did. Usually I look at the job and think to myself, “It really doesn’t look THAT bad,” then find out that the concrete is 10” thick in the exact spot I am going to bust up (only because they had accidentally dug too deep and had some leftover cement). It happens to me more often then not. I’ve had experienc...

That old house #11: Yes, this IS the final installment

01-11-2013 05:57 AM by BillyJ | 29 comments »

Now for the details of the remodeling. Original budget: $14k. Final budget: to be determined (right now we are double the original amount). True, I am finished with the kitchen, and I believe she does not have any further plans for the kitchen, but the “house” now became the former kitchen. I think she has enough for me to do for the rest of my life. EVERYTHING was upgraded during this remodel. From the 1/2 dozen different door knobs I bought, to hinges, slides, lights, etc....

Our Home

11-21-2012 06:30 PM by reedwood | 92 comments »

.. I think I know about what my house is worth but how can you put a value on a home full of memories of children growing up, pets that come and go too quickly and time spent with the ones you love? So many memories of working on a house to make it a home that reflects our personality and taste in art and beauty. My wife, Lynn and I have lived here since 1990. We looked for six months before we found this little diamond in the rough. It wasn’t much to look at back then, but as a ...

My Living Room #1: Demo time!

09-14-2012 04:02 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 106 comments »

I have been targetting my living room for the longest time. And since I have been playing with small pieces of wood for several weeks now, my cash situation has recovered and I had the money to invest in my wood floor. This room is where the dominos will start to fall in rapid succession. You see, I own the furniture I will upholster for that room. I own the fabric I will upholster than furniture in. Getting that stuff upholstered get’s it out of my garage and gives me room to work. Wit...
