Now that I’m done with the major stuff, and recapping the entirety of the project, I have to say that the chronology of this blog is way off, for good reason. The kitchen cabinet install from my previous blog entry happened on the Wednesday before we moved in (Friday, Nov 14th… “A Day That Will Live in Infamy”). I’ve skipped ahead quite a bit to get to the “juicy bits”, and to avoid countless blogs like this:
The New House #9 – Today I scra...

I suppose that having lived here for almost 10 years now it isn’t really the Beginning. However. This is a new year and I finally have a New year with a workshop at the house with all of my woodworking tools at hand. The past few years they’ve been in a storage unit downtown (relative term for Lakeport NY).
The house is a ‘starter’ home, in a relatively rural area of NY near Syracuse. We’re in an area which used to be ‘camps’ but now is primarily ...

Ok, so now that the holidays have cooled down a bit, and I’ve got a bit of time to catch up on this, I figured I’d jump back in and document where we’re at…
When we last saw our intrepid home refurber, the kitchen was getting prepped for cabinets and floors… let’s see how it went, shall we?
After ripping up the rotten floors, of course the next step was to re-build them and get it all leveled:
Once I had rebuilt the floor sections, the room...

Hi All,
I am getting very close to being finished. As you can see we have decided to move in early as the snow was coming. I have a drawer to build that goes under the heater area and will hold about three 40 pound bags of wood pellets. The top ended up being 2.5 ” thick and supports the pellet stove fine. The kitchen is looking better after installing the appliances and should look even better after I get the cabinet doors built and installedMore pics to come as I get a chance to do mor...

Okay, it has been a while since the last update so let me get everyone up to date. My contractor’s father passed away unexpectedly. This was a great loss for all of us as we knew him well, he was a grand old English Gentlemen. The service was a beautiful celebration of his life which helped to medigate our sadness at his passing. So needless to say our friends loss is obviously more important then anything in my kitchen, we can wait as long as needed before she can come back to work...

I’m posting as I have a free 20 minutes to compile these, so my timeline is a bit scattered… I’m well into other stuff, but I’m trying to make sure I get the big stuff documented here, so I’m really like a week or so ahead in the project, this was last weekend’s adventure.
My two biggest “projects” inside this giant project…. are the painting/wall prep and re-doing the kitchen.
The kitchen was by far the nastiest room in the house...

Well, it has been a while and slowly but surely I have gotten a few more things accomplished. I was able to install, grout and seal the tile backsplash above the counters. I had to stop just past the sink because the wall is not plumb, (gotta love these old houses) so the contractor will be fixing that in Nov for us and then I will be able to finish that portion of the remodel.
I have primed the wood trim; which will fit in the space btwn the backsplash tiles the wall and bottom of the...

I just installed the first cabinets for the kitchen in Delaware.
Old Picture. You can see my Greene and Greene Thorsten table that was entered in a LumberJock challenge.
New picture.
The counter top is from the old cabinet. i plan to put down Corian. I’m doing it myself so I’ll do some fill-in first until I get the shop emptied a little.
I built one upper cabinet and one lower cabinet. A lot of other wood has been cut and the pieces needing veneer have been mostly ...

The contractor removed the old floor tiles and installed the new floor tiles while I was out of town on a business trip. It was nice not having to deal with the noise and the disruption but I had a lot of work to do to get the room ready by removing all the stuff from the kitchen, not a lot of fun.The new floor turned out fine but the grout color does not match what we selected, bummer! The grout is gray but we wanted a light tan color, the installed grout doesn’t match the color palate...

Received the new wet tile saw from Amazon, several days sooner than expected. The new saw works great and is extremely easy to setup and use, just like it was advertised. I continued installing the small tiles above the back splash as far as I could go. The remaining portion of the wall is not plumb and needs to be refloated. I met with the contractor this morning and she won’t be back until around Nov to do the walls and ceiling. Kinda long from now but she is a dear friend who ha...
