Distractions can be painful

11-21-2012 06:37 PM by reedwood | 7 comments »

After 36 years of woodworking and some major remodeling, I can be proud of my lack of injuries more severe than a nasty oak splinter under the finger nail or pinning my finger to a door jam with a 18 ga. nail gun. I have always strived to be safe and totally focused on what I’m wearing, where my hands are and using repetitive safety methods on every power tool. I show my hands all the time to my guys as an example. See? No scars, ten fingers, safety first. We all watched out for ...

The Daughter's Room #3: Room Done - On to building storage.

09-01-2012 02:07 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Painting, flooring, hardware, trim is done. You may remember that I built the door trim from scratch. The shoe molding is also mine. Baseboards, I bought. The design for the simple murals started from my head but they don’t look anything like I started with. My daughter kept refining it. What’s cool is Victoria, picked all her colors, the style of the murals, the location, size color combinations etc. She made her own templates for the edges and picked which edges I used for ea...

The Daughter's Room #1: Wake up Wake up Mark, You have to do Victoria's Room!

08-24-2012 03:51 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 5 comments »

“Huh? Wuzzat? I’m still asleep” “Victoria keeps wondering when you are going to do her room. Can’t you just do it now and get it over with?” “Yeah Babe I suppose I can.” Everything else is on hold very suddenly. Day one – I tried to take some measurements without tripping over her precious collection. I got enough actually to figure out how I’m going to handle the huge problem of storage. After work I went and picked up h...

Am I Really going to do that to my fireplace!? #1: Some Materials gathered and I'm dying to start!

08-11-2012 03:58 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 28 comments »

Once again, I have totally lost my mind. Demo is not done. I haven’t built a scaffold. I don’t have the fireplace stone veener. I haven’t bought my wood floor for the living room. The hallway is not complete. There are a bazillion reasons why I shouldn’t start and yet….. I’ve got to take a few breaths and delay for a while while I think about execution and the layout of what I’m thinking. The more days I can do that, the better off I will be. If I ...

The Son's Room #2: Day 3. To the finish.

08-04-2012 12:57 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Got up at 5:30. As soon as it was light enough, I had an extremely gratifying round of priming. I realized that every stick of door trim for the entire house is primed. It’s 7:50. Jr is asleep. I’m getting that cold glass of water ready as Gary recommended. You learn the most useful things here.

The Son's Room.

07-31-2012 08:28 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 7 comments »

My son has one year of high school left. I have changed my plans for doing the house so we can get his room next. Years ago I painted a mural on 2 of his walls. The wall paint we keep. I need to touch up the base color here and there but painting will not be a major chore. Another minor chore will be to get the wobble out of his ceiling fan. It’s a nice looking, brushed nickel, Hunter fan so we are keeping it. It’s about 5 year old but I still see similar stuff in the box st...

Simple Hall Way redo. #6: The End in Sight?

07-21-2012 05:23 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 36 comments »

The end is not necessarily in sight but my stopping point will be soon I think. I have started attaching base boards tonight but I quit a few minutes after 9:00 I don’t want my neighbors on the war path because of my miter saw noise. The dremel tool isn’t terribly quiet either. As for inside the house, the compressor is a noisy beast. I put up the trim to divide the hallway from the living room. I also got a few pieces of base board attached. As you can see I ...

House Renovation #1: A Family and Friend Renovation

02-22-2011 02:05 AM by chief101 | 3 comments »

My first adventure in refurbishing was in 1974. I added a 17×27 addition to my ranch style home in Northfield Village, Ohio. I built it myself with the help of friends and a few issues of Time Do It Yourself magazines. These were very popular at the time and extremely helpful. The addition had a cathedral ceiling, main room 17×19, exposed beam, an 8×13 laundry room, in ceiling stereo speakers, and recessed lighting. One wall 17ft was an all split brick fireplace. Mason Bill Swa...
