That old house #11: Yes, this IS the final installment

01-11-2013 05:57 AM by BillyJ | 29 comments »

Now for the details of the remodeling. Original budget: $14k. Final budget: to be determined (right now we are double the original amount). True, I am finished with the kitchen, and I believe she does not have any further plans for the kitchen, but the “house” now became the former kitchen. I think she has enough for me to do for the rest of my life. EVERYTHING was upgraded during this remodel. From the 1/2 dozen different door knobs I bought, to hinges, slides, lights, etc....

The Daughter's Room #3: Room Done - On to building storage.

09-01-2012 02:07 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 41 comments »

Painting, flooring, hardware, trim is done. You may remember that I built the door trim from scratch. The shoe molding is also mine. Baseboards, I bought. The design for the simple murals started from my head but they don’t look anything like I started with. My daughter kept refining it. What’s cool is Victoria, picked all her colors, the style of the murals, the location, size color combinations etc. She made her own templates for the edges and picked which edges I used for ea...

The Daughter's Room #1: Wake up Wake up Mark, You have to do Victoria's Room!

08-24-2012 03:51 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 38 comments »

“Huh? Wuzzat? I’m still asleep” “Victoria keeps wondering when you are going to do her room. Can’t you just do it now and get it over with?” “Yeah Babe I suppose I can.” Everything else is on hold very suddenly. Day one – I tried to take some measurements without tripping over her precious collection. I got enough actually to figure out how I’m going to handle the huge problem of storage. After work I went and picked up h...

The Son's Room #2: Day 3. To the finish.

08-04-2012 12:57 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 30 comments »

Got up at 5:30. As soon as it was light enough, I had an extremely gratifying round of priming. I realized that every stick of door trim for the entire house is primed. It’s 7:50. Jr is asleep. I’m getting that cold glass of water ready as Gary recommended. You learn the most useful things here.

The Son's Room #1: Day 1 of the real thing

08-03-2012 03:44 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 13 comments »

Howdy, We started the day off with my son’s friend showing up at 8:00 AM. Which was fine because I started rolling at 6. We cleared out the living room and moved OIL paint heaquarters to the patio. We went inside and I told him to help my son clear out the room. After about five minutes of doing more pred, I went to take another look. The buddy was sitting casually on the end of my son’s bed and my son was showing a box of junk he had kept forever. Well – the buddy was on...

The Son's Room.

07-31-2012 08:28 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 37 comments »

My son has one year of high school left. I have changed my plans for doing the house so we can get his room next. Years ago I painted a mural on 2 of his walls. The wall paint we keep. I need to touch up the base color here and there but painting will not be a major chore. Another minor chore will be to get the wobble out of his ceiling fan. It’s a nice looking, brushed nickel, Hunter fan so we are keeping it. It’s about 5 year old but I still see similar stuff in the box st...

Simple Hall Way redo. #4: Day 7

07-16-2012 04:18 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 36 comments »

This was definitely a long day. I did a door – big deal. But I was determined to finish the floor. It was 6:00pm by the time I got all the tile down. At 7. I got home with the grout. I added water to the bucket from the hose and I said “That looks like 2 quarts!” No more eyeballing the water. It took 1.3 bags of grout to get the right consistency from my eyeball method. I started grouting an began to wonder about the expert advice I had received about the edges....
