That old house #11: Yes, this IS the final installment

01-11-2013 05:57 AM by BillyJ | 7 comments »

Now for the details of the remodeling. Original budget: $14k. Final budget: to be determined (right now we are double the original amount). True, I am finished with the kitchen, and I believe she does not have any further plans for the kitchen, but the “house” now became the former kitchen. I think she has enough for me to do for the rest of my life. EVERYTHING was upgraded during this remodel. From the 1/2 dozen different door knobs I bought, to hinges, slides, lights, etc....

The New Work Shop #1: Its starting to look like a real shop

01-08-2013 04:11 AM by sandhill | 3 comments »

I started this about 11 months ago but we had some obstacles to maneuver around along the way. First was getting the electric in. 100AMP service then insulation to the walls and put up 5/8” fire code sheet rock, then the lighting. Now I am putting up the ceiling, yea I know it should go up before the walls but I am putting up a 12” X 3/4” plywood boarder around the walls right to the ceiling so it makes no difference once its sealed and painted. When that parts done I wi...

My Living Room #3: Progress finally

12-02-2012 11:41 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 13 comments »

I only worked about 12 hours this weekend. I made enough casing for 4 doors. That will take care of all the thresholds in the vicinity. I made enough quarter round for the entire room and then some. I stained and poly’d the fireplace shoe molding. I painted all the baseboard. Most importantly, I installed the baseboard and quarter round in the corner where the Christmas tree will go. It’s caulked and touched up. I managed to buy one more day of life by doing that. You’ll ...

Marching orders are in #1: Fireplace surround and mantel.

11-29-2012 11:58 PM by sandhill | 18 comments »

My better half is out buying paint for our living room plus some other goodies. We have been in this house for a year now and although it was painted when we moved in we can not live with the color “which is in every room including the bathrooms”. I have no idea which color she is picking out, ah maybe a little idea and the operative words are “that’s a great color honey”. So here is what I am starting with. This first picture shows a 2” X 6” velcroed...

My Living Room #1: Demo time!

09-14-2012 04:02 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 18 comments »

I have been targetting my living room for the longest time. And since I have been playing with small pieces of wood for several weeks now, my cash situation has recovered and I had the money to invest in my wood floor. This room is where the dominos will start to fall in rapid succession. You see, I own the furniture I will upholster for that room. I own the fabric I will upholster than furniture in. Getting that stuff upholstered get’s it out of my garage and gives me room to work. Wit...

The Daughter's Room #3: Room Done - On to building storage.

09-01-2012 02:07 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Painting, flooring, hardware, trim is done. You may remember that I built the door trim from scratch. The shoe molding is also mine. Baseboards, I bought. The design for the simple murals started from my head but they don’t look anything like I started with. My daughter kept refining it. What’s cool is Victoria, picked all her colors, the style of the murals, the location, size color combinations etc. She made her own templates for the edges and picked which edges I used for ea...

A Shop for Dan #13: Final inspection

08-30-2012 04:16 PM by Dan Lyke | 2 comments »

Just to complete the series: Workshop passed final inspection back at the beginning of August. Big ol’ project off my plate, awesome resources to now do cool kickass stuff with. A little over a year since I first broke ground, and then broke my rib and had to take time off. So with the injury and time to recover I didn’t really get started in earnest ‘til the end of September last year. But I can take a deep breath and say “there, that’s done”, and start...

The Daughter's Room #1: Wake up Wake up Mark, You have to do Victoria's Room!

08-24-2012 03:51 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 5 comments »

“Huh? Wuzzat? I’m still asleep” “Victoria keeps wondering when you are going to do her room. Can’t you just do it now and get it over with?” “Yeah Babe I suppose I can.” Everything else is on hold very suddenly. Day one – I tried to take some measurements without tripping over her precious collection. I got enough actually to figure out how I’m going to handle the huge problem of storage. After work I went and picked up h...

The Son's Room #2: Day 3. To the finish.

08-04-2012 12:57 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Got up at 5:30. As soon as it was light enough, I had an extremely gratifying round of priming. I realized that every stick of door trim for the entire house is primed. It’s 7:50. Jr is asleep. I’m getting that cold glass of water ready as Gary recommended. You learn the most useful things here.
