Little House in the Heights #1: The House

04-06-2013 03:53 AM by BillyJ | 9 comments »

SWMBO told me that the house was going on sale. That sentence translated into – we’re buying it. The house had belonged to her aunt and uncle, and it didn’t matter whether it was something worth buying. After walking through it (it took about 30 seconds), and from what I saw, it looked doable. Living room Kitchen / utility room Bathroom Bedrooms That’s it! About 670 sq ft, slab on grade. Oh, it does have a garage – a...

Remodeling a family cottage #1: Bathroom, Bedroom, and now living area

06-09-2013 02:10 AM by Craftsman on the Lake | 5 comments »

The wife and I moved into an old family cottage on Mousam Lake in Maine a few years ago. It was last remodeled in 1973 when I was 18 years old. We did it all ourselves so I’m familiar with it. The place was nicely done in 70’s styled dark wall paneling and carpets. You know what I mean. We’ve been retired awhile now and it’s time to change things. We need to lighten things up and enlarge without changing the dimensions. We decided to combine two adjoining bedrooms int...

The Daughter's Room #3: Room Done - On to building storage.

09-01-2012 02:07 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Painting, flooring, hardware, trim is done. You may remember that I built the door trim from scratch. The shoe molding is also mine. Baseboards, I bought. The design for the simple murals started from my head but they don’t look anything like I started with. My daughter kept refining it. What’s cool is Victoria, picked all her colors, the style of the murals, the location, size color combinations etc. She made her own templates for the edges and picked which edges I used for ea...

The Son's Room #1: Day 1 of the real thing

08-03-2012 03:44 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 13 comments »

Howdy, We started the day off with my son’s friend showing up at 8:00 AM. Which was fine because I started rolling at 6. We cleared out the living room and moved OIL paint heaquarters to the patio. We went inside and I told him to help my son clear out the room. After about five minutes of doing more pred, I went to take another look. The buddy was sitting casually on the end of my son’s bed and my son was showing a box of junk he had kept forever. Well – the buddy was on...

Am I Really going to do that to my fireplace!? #1: Some Materials gathered and I'm dying to start!

08-11-2012 03:58 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 28 comments »

Once again, I have totally lost my mind. Demo is not done. I haven’t built a scaffold. I don’t have the fireplace stone veener. I haven’t bought my wood floor for the living room. The hallway is not complete. There are a bazillion reasons why I shouldn’t start and yet….. I’ve got to take a few breaths and delay for a while while I think about execution and the layout of what I’m thinking. The more days I can do that, the better off I will be. If I ...

How To Build a Wardrobe

03-08-2012 02:41 AM by woodluc | 1 comment »

Hey fellow Home Refurbers,I thought I would share a recent article I posted on my blog. It might be helpful to someone needing a cost effective plan for a wardrobe. Renovating houses and home improvement projects are a very popular way to spend the weekends. With money being tight these days most home owners are choosing to put on the tool belt and get into the DYI method of renovating. If you fancy yourself a bit handy, this is a great way to modernize your house and not have an expens...

The Daughter's Room #1: Wake up Wake up Mark, You have to do Victoria's Room!

08-24-2012 03:51 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 5 comments »

“Huh? Wuzzat? I’m still asleep” “Victoria keeps wondering when you are going to do her room. Can’t you just do it now and get it over with?” “Yeah Babe I suppose I can.” Everything else is on hold very suddenly. Day one – I tried to take some measurements without tripping over her precious collection. I got enough actually to figure out how I’m going to handle the huge problem of storage. After work I went and picked up h...

My first refurb blog

03-01-2010 03:42 AM by Jimi_C | 2 comments »

Been busy working on home improvement stuff, and haven’t had a chance to do any wood working (it’s also still been pretty cold here), so I thought I’d share some of the work I’ve been doing. First up was our bathroom, which needed a new shower fixture. The old one was extremely old, and I couldn’t find replacement parts to fix a valve stem issue, so I decided to upgrade. The first problem I ran into was the fact that the wall was way thicker than I thought, ...

Dining Room #3: taking shape

02-03-2010 08:52 PM by JeffS | 2 comments »

Once I closed in new exterior wall, I framed in the old porch floor area to bring it up flush with the interior floors. From there, taking down the old wall was pretty easy; just had lots of electrical to re-route. Framing in the new wall to divide the space into a Foyer and Dining Room Onto the drywall! Pretty straightforward at this point. I pulled new electrical into the basement for outlets, ceiling lights, wall sconces, 3 way switches, outdoor lights…lots of ne...
