A bit of background… We (my wife and I) purchased our first house together in march of 2015 knowing that we would not move in until June. I talked her into a fixer based on the fact that myself and a buddy worked our way through college working for our landlord fixing up his old rentals and also flipping houses for him. So we swooped in and got a fixer out from underneath a local flipper because he was trying to nickel and dime the seller.
What made this a good purchase is that the e...

I posted this blog on LumberJocks about seven months ago. I had to edit it to restore photos (I have changed my photo host) so while I was at it, I thought I would post it here for my first HomeReburbers blog.
The first major problem (project) started when I walked out the front door of my house one day and my foot went right through the slate porch. It shocked me more than anything because I thought the slate was bedded with a solid concrete pad. We have lived here for 25 years. I have al...

If there’s one thing I hate it’s sleeping in a bedroom that’s full of clutter and clothes everywhere. I always try to clear up my bedroom as best I can but unfortunately my boyfriend doesn’t seem to share my sense of tidiness and it always ends up with clothes and what not spread about the room! When I do get a chance to clean and tidy the room though, there are a couple of ideas I have in mind on how to turn it from something that’s average into something beautiful. Of course there are...

Today people are looking for ways to improve their homes for better living and more enjoyment. Investing a little time and money will go a long way to transform your home into the pride of the neighborhood.
Curb Appeal – Let’s begin outside. Mow the grass, pull the weeds, edge the lawns and give the bedding areas the attention and maintenance they deserve. Liven up the planting areas with perennials for substance, and then go for color with annuals. Select a color scheme such as reds...

I’m relatively new to this whole blogging thing so please bear with me if this article isn’t quite up to Shakespearean standard just yet! This is my first blog post so I thought I’d make it about something that’s been interesting me as of late. Firstly, my main job is a real estate agent. So I guess you can say my main job is slightly boring! However, the last 3-4 years of so I’ve actually started taking up small DIY jobs in and around the house. My boyfriend has never been very good with thi...

I’m in the process of moving a few things over here from LJ. As a contractor, I should be posting here anyway.
..
I love woodworking and like many of you, I love to write about it.
This short story is my first attempt at something dramatic and I wanted to share it with you. I hope you’re OK with it. It was very hard to write.
Based on a true story..
No Good Deed.
I believe you should pay it forward. Our immortality lies in the knowledge you leave behind. Our mark in ...

I hate bathrooms that lack personality, are cluttered and whose design makes them practically unusable. Yes, I am pretty sure you’ve come across bathrooms that just don’t look good any which way you look at them and also fall flat on the usability front. Here’s the truth, my bathroom also lacked the simple pleasures we expect such rooms to have and there came a time when I just couldn’t stand its design and decided to remodel it.
Before I tell you what I did to ...

I got up early and added some flooring then I weighted and waited.
And weighted and waited.
Then something broke loose and I was able to make a lot of good progress very quickly.
I was simply laying floor and making cuts. The tools were just appearing in my hands. The glue slops were being cleaned. Weights were being distributed. Boards were being pre-inspected and sorted depending on the damage if any. New boards were coming in and being mixed in with the other boards.

After rearranging a bunch of wiring, we put up 30 sheets of sheetrock and did the taping. Not a fun job but now it’s done the more fun part begins with making the woodwork. I purchased about 200 bdft of oak the other day and got the shop cleaned. Now ready to process the wood to make the casings and moulding for the windows and the oak trim for the beam, stairway, and other places. here is a single view of the taped room. Remember, I’ve taken a load bearing wall down and made thre...

This project was completed in early December, but still had a punch-list to finish off (touch up painting, 3rd screws in hinges, etc.). Overall, everything on this job went well. I can’t say I am sorry that I took it on, as I learned a LOT in this never-ending ordeal. When I was working on that list last night, she handed me her “list” of things she thought were missing. She was 100% correct – they were all missing because every item was new to the project. I told her ...
