Remodeling a family cottage #5: Window dressing

08-20-2013 09:25 PM by Craftsman on the Lake | 20 comments »

The past couple of days I have prepped some oak and cut it into the parts I need to make the architrave moldings in the living room. As you can see it consists of four parts. One thin strip, one cove, and two ogees. Stacked one atop another they make a nice window top. The side moldings are fluted. Simple design, not difficult to make and a nice effect that will not need any other window dressing like curtains..The parts: from left to right. thin strip, large cove, narrow ogee, wide ogee..Cap...

Tools of the Trade - The Evolution of My Woodworking Tools

03-07-2013 02:42 PM by Chris Mobley | 4 comments »

Every wood worker has to start somewhere. My somewhere began with the purchase of a Shop Smith and this began the evolution of my woodworking tools. My mother and father had a friend that was selling their Shop Smith multi tool system back in the mid 1990’s and I was lucky enough to purchase it. This Shop Smith is perfect for doing small projects but not big construction jobs like I was used to. I decided that buying this system gave me a reason to put my creativeness to work and begin doing ...

The Daughter's Room #3: Room Done - On to building storage.

09-01-2012 02:07 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Painting, flooring, hardware, trim is done. You may remember that I built the door trim from scratch. The shoe molding is also mine. Baseboards, I bought. The design for the simple murals started from my head but they don’t look anything like I started with. My daughter kept refining it. What’s cool is Victoria, picked all her colors, the style of the murals, the location, size color combinations etc. She made her own templates for the edges and picked which edges I used for ea...

The Daughter's Room #1: Wake up Wake up Mark, You have to do Victoria's Room!

08-24-2012 03:51 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 5 comments »

“Huh? Wuzzat? I’m still asleep” “Victoria keeps wondering when you are going to do her room. Can’t you just do it now and get it over with?” “Yeah Babe I suppose I can.” Everything else is on hold very suddenly. Day one – I tried to take some measurements without tripping over her precious collection. I got enough actually to figure out how I’m going to handle the huge problem of storage. After work I went and picked up h...

The Son's Room #2: Day 3. To the finish.

08-04-2012 12:57 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Got up at 5:30. As soon as it was light enough, I had an extremely gratifying round of priming. I realized that every stick of door trim for the entire house is primed. It’s 7:50. Jr is asleep. I’m getting that cold glass of water ready as Gary recommended. You learn the most useful things here.

The Son's Room #1: Day 1 of the real thing

08-03-2012 03:44 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 13 comments »

Howdy, We started the day off with my son’s friend showing up at 8:00 AM. Which was fine because I started rolling at 6. We cleared out the living room and moved OIL paint heaquarters to the patio. We went inside and I told him to help my son clear out the room. After about five minutes of doing more pred, I went to take another look. The buddy was sitting casually on the end of my son’s bed and my son was showing a box of junk he had kept forever. Well – the buddy was on...

The Son's Room.

07-31-2012 08:28 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 7 comments »

My son has one year of high school left. I have changed my plans for doing the house so we can get his room next. Years ago I painted a mural on 2 of his walls. The wall paint we keep. I need to touch up the base color here and there but painting will not be a major chore. Another minor chore will be to get the wobble out of his ceiling fan. It’s a nice looking, brushed nickel, Hunter fan so we are keeping it. It’s about 5 year old but I still see similar stuff in the box st...

That old house #7: Perhaps within a year???

04-02-2012 04:48 AM by BillyJ | 3 comments »

I’m very rapidly approaching the 1-year mark on this renovation. It seems like a lifetime of work that keeps going. SO many things have changed, I hardly recognize the initial proposal. In fact, I just looked at the proposal, and this remodel has increased at least 3-times in size and scope. It is not longer the original plan; that went to the wayside almost immediately. Here is where I stand. 1. New ideas make more work. The painting is finished (I think), and there should not be...

RENOVATING #2: Putting 'Living' back into the living room...Finale

02-28-2012 09:53 PM by rdlaurance | 1 comment »

Caught with a little time between projects while casting off the last of a winter cold, I felt I should add an update to my last blog of “ As we had earlier given away an antique set we had had (for decades), the style looked right, the color looked right, the price was certainly right and we now had a room that needed furnishing. So here they are. Wall decorations still seem a bit sparse but that may be more of a reflection on where our tastes have been moving these last six or se...

Living room floor

07-15-2010 03:48 PM by DrRum | 1 comment »

I bought my house almost 2 years ago and the upstairs had carpet which was a mess. When we ripped it out we found some 2” wide oak and then for some reason plywood. Seems like the previous owner was thinking of adding a second layer of ply to the subfloor and then maybe add something over?? The adjoining kitchen had the same layer of ply under the linoleum (spelling??). So we found that in order to get the flooring we wanted (she wanted 5” wide brazilian cherry), that we were l...
