Remodeling a family cottage #2: Sheetrock up and taped

07-08-2013 11:18 PM by Craftsman on the Lake | 173 comments »

After rearranging a bunch of wiring, we put up 30 sheets of sheetrock and did the taping. Not a fun job but now it’s done the more fun part begins with making the woodwork. I purchased about 200 bdft of oak the other day and got the shop cleaned. Now ready to process the wood to make the casings and moulding for the windows and the oak trim for the beam, stairway, and other places. here is a single view of the taped room. Remember, I’ve taken a load bearing wall down and made thre...

Little House in the Heights #3: Demo days

04-29-2013 10:43 PM by BillyJ | 5 comments »

The demolition continues in this segment, with the jack-hammer getting the best of me. Although I rarely get the chance to rejoice during demo, this time I did. Usually I look at the job and think to myself, “It really doesn’t look THAT bad,” then find out that the concrete is 10” thick in the exact spot I am going to bust up (only because they had accidentally dug too deep and had some leftover cement). It happens to me more often then not. I’ve had experienc...

Am I Really going to do that to my fireplace!? #1: Some Materials gathered and I'm dying to start!

08-11-2012 03:58 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 54 comments »

Once again, I have totally lost my mind. Demo is not done. I haven’t built a scaffold. I don’t have the fireplace stone veener. I haven’t bought my wood floor for the living room. The hallway is not complete. There are a bazillion reasons why I shouldn’t start and yet….. I’ve got to take a few breaths and delay for a while while I think about execution and the layout of what I’m thinking. The more days I can do that, the better off I will be. If I ...

The Son's Room #1: Day 1 of the real thing

08-03-2012 03:44 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 13 comments »

Howdy, We started the day off with my son’s friend showing up at 8:00 AM. Which was fine because I started rolling at 6. We cleared out the living room and moved OIL paint heaquarters to the patio. We went inside and I told him to help my son clear out the room. After about five minutes of doing more pred, I went to take another look. The buddy was sitting casually on the end of my son’s bed and my son was showing a box of junk he had kept forever. Well – the buddy was on...

RENOVATING #2: Putting 'Living' back into the living room...Finale

02-28-2012 09:53 PM by rdlaurance | 2 comments »

Caught with a little time between projects while casting off the last of a winter cold, I felt I should add an update to my last blog of “ As we had earlier given away an antique set we had had (for decades), the style looked right, the color looked right, the price was certainly right and we now had a room that needed furnishing. So here they are. Wall decorations still seem a bit sparse but that may be more of a reflection on where our tastes have been moving these last six or se...

RENOVATING #1: Putting 'Living' back into the living room....

12-18-2011 04:34 PM by rdlaurance | 2 comments »

Seems as though it has been a long time (15 months) in coming since my earlier and only posted item here on Refurbishers®. As such, I was feeling that perhaps a new posting was to be my ‘today’s project.’ Project indeed! Perusing through four years of construction photos (literally thousands) … selecting just those that I felt were important enough aspects of the project … importing into Photoshop for editing to trim the memory sizes and then a long sit down with a fresh ...

A Shop for Dan #7: And the walls, go tumblin' up!

12-02-2011 02:22 AM by Dan Lyke | 5 comments »

My Dad came out to visit for two weeks, and we kicked it pretty hard. We assembled the walls, and with some help from my friend Alan got ‘em up. We got the sheathing on, and after a mis-communication with the truss guys got the trusses up, and the roof sheathing on: And then I took a break for Thanksgiving vacation. Got the framing inspection this week, had to double-up with galvanized nails for the sheathing on the sills (because the sills are treated), so that inspection is ...
