Reed's WoodShop

04-07-2014 01:45 PM by reedwood | 39 comments »

I received a post from Fine Woodworking on Facebook the other day about a survey they were doing about small shops. The survey asked the following questions and I thought it would be fun to post my reply here at Refurbers. Reed’s 24×28 Wood shop My 3×4 ft. oak tool box is over 20 yrs. old and has outlasted 4 work vans.It has 2 dovetailed drawers that are 3 ft. deep with dividers for hand tools, and dividers inside for nail guns, hand saws, blades, sand pa...

09-13-2014 04:24 PM by Dan Lyke | 48 comments »

Been a while since we’ve done a workshop update. The roof has been keeping us in strawberries and basil all summer, and is starting to deliver on other herbs.

My first Wood Shop - 1974

11-21-2012 06:40 PM by reedwood | 49 comments »

. . Growing up in the hill country of Austin Texas, I was the oldest of five kids. I had two sisters, two little brothers, and my dog, Fred. By the time I was 15 years old, I remember how important personal space was to me. So, I decided to tear down the old chicken shack behind our house in the country and build a woodshop, mostly out of scrap wood. It wasn’t that big; maybe 10×16 with a storage shed off the back. . .The best part was the 10×10 second floor lo...

Distractions can be painful

11-21-2012 06:37 PM by reedwood | 38 comments »

After 36 years of woodworking and some major remodeling, I can be proud of my lack of injuries more severe than a nasty oak splinter under the finger nail or pinning my finger to a door jam with a 18 ga. nail gun. I have always strived to be safe and totally focused on what I’m wearing, where my hands are and using repetitive safety methods on every power tool. I show my hands all the time to my guys as an example. See? No scars, ten fingers, safety first. We all watched out for ...

A Shop for Dan #13: Final inspection

08-30-2012 04:16 PM by Dan Lyke | 25 comments »

Just to complete the series: Workshop passed final inspection back at the beginning of August. Big ol’ project off my plate, awesome resources to now do cool kickass stuff with. A little over a year since I first broke ground, and then broke my rib and had to take time off. So with the injury and time to recover I didn’t really get started in earnest ‘til the end of September last year. But I can take a deep breath and say “there, that’s done”, and start...

A Shop for Dan #12: We have plants!

06-06-2012 05:57 PM by Dan Lyke | 12 comments »

And, of course, I confused cubic feet with square feet and half-ordered my dirt, but 6 tons of dirt later, We slapped some strawberry plants we had from moving a few other things around the yard up on the roof, and then Yesterday afternoon I went and bought a couple of sedums and strawberries and put ‘em in up there: Another coat of paint on the eaves and I’ve done everything necessary for my final inspection, then I need to run some hose up there for drip irrigation and...

A Shop for Dan #11: Lifting the soil

05-30-2012 04:50 PM by Dan Lyke | 6 comments »

It’s been a while since my last update here, but work hasn’t stopped that much. I did get employed, which sucks, but you know, cash flow and all that. Anyway, I was kinda stalled out so I called in a “final” inspection on my two permits on the shop, got sign-off on the electrical, and 3 things left on the main permit: They wanted to see the eaves painted, a landing for the door, and the soil on the roof. I need all those things done anyway, but getting a good clean ...
