Part 1: addition / remodel: BEFORE

Hello, I just discovered this site, via lumberjocks. I have been working on our massive dining room project for over a year now! Here’s the history: My wife and I inherited an antique dining room set from her grandparents, but we did not yet have a dining room. When we bought the house, we had plans for turning the front living room into a dining room, as we also had another room serving as a family room elsewhere in the house. So, time to get cranking on the dining room proje...

Part 2: Framing

Step 1: frame in the new exterior wall. I figured it would be better to start with that instead of taking out the old wall first: keep more heat in the house hopefully! So, here are some photos showing the process. I framed the wall in 3 sections, on the icy driveway, and then flipped them up into place. Pretty straightforward at this point. I pulled new electrical into the basement for outlets, ceiling lights, wall sconces, 3 way switches, outdoor lights…lots of ne...

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do much work on the dining room all summer 2009. We had a bad Ice Storm that left me with 12 trees down and hundreds of limbs. So, much of the summer and fall were spent dealing with yard cleanup and firewood splitting. Oh yeah, and while we were at it, we figured we might as well give the master bedroom and office a cosmetic makeover. So, we ripped out the last bits of wall to wall carpet, gave the ceiling and walls a fresh coat of paint, and then ...

Part 5: dining room floor

03-17-2010 04:14 PM by JeffS | 2 comments »

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas I was able to get the flooring down. It is solid maple with a mahogany border. To make the border, I ended up going out and buying rough mahogany and milling it down to the right size and shape, then took it to the router table to put on a tongue and groove to match the maple flooring. I put down the finish over new years week…of course it was 0 degrees outside, so I had to keep the furnace running to keep the place warm enough, and since we have ...
