Unrelatedly, but since you’re the only person I know of as an editor or “in charge”: What can we do about cleaning up this site a bit? The projects are totally overrun with spam, the forums are moderately so, and LumberJocks gets all the cool new features.

I doubt we’ll be getting any more participants if the site primarily presents all the spam projects… It seems like either we should do something, or abandon it…

We have a glitch in HR & GT, deep in the coding somewhere… some technical thingy that happened during transferring to a server. LumberJocks survived without the flaw and so anti-spam strategies have been able to be implemented.

As someone who runs a site on the open web, I also know that it’s not just a tech problem, and that if this is going to be as vibrant and helpful a site as LumberJocks we need to figure out how to create a stronger culture here. Spam is a big part of that, but we also just don’t have the users yet; there’s something else missing.

But I don’t know what that magic is…

I’m not sure either … we’ve done lots of things in the past and it didn’t take off like LumberJocks did.
Perhaps we just aren’t targeting the right audience. Is it the average home owner or professional renovators/builders .. or ?

Hmmm, maybe that’s the problem: The professional renovators are probably largely looking for new customers, rather than worrying about doing skill share, and I am distinctly not the average home owner.

(As witnessed by the looks I get when I say “So if you ever want to re-plumb your house, I have the $400 PEX joiner tool that I’ve only used on this one project…”)
