A bathroom is important for its functionality but it doesn’t have to be all about just personal hygiene. We often overlook the importance of relaxing and indulging in a nice warm bath in a bathroom that looks wonderful.

Perhaps your bathroom may never be able to imitate the plush ones in boutique hotels but that doesn’t mean you have to make do with a drab one at home. You can opt for a full bathroom renovation or just make small changes to transform your lifeless bathroom into your dream bathroom.

Here are some important aspects you should pay attention to.

Color Scheme

If finances allow you, there are plenty of things you can change in your bathroom. For a quick and inexpensive make-over, you can just stick to painting the walls in a different color.

If you plan on going for dark colors, make sure you have adequate light- natural or artificial. You don’t want to squint hard into the mirror when you are shaving or applying make-up.

Lighter colors will work well for small bathrooms. If you finalize a particular color, do check how it looks like under artificial light. You need to do this so that you don’t end up with a color that looks dull under incandescent or other light.

If you can’t think of anything, an all-white color scheme will always work in any bathroom. Get a pebbled floor and you will have created a masterpiece out of a mundane bathroom. Remember that such floors take time to drain. Just make sure that the pitch angle is proper. Using an epoxy grout will help the floor to dry quicker.

Furnishings

Cabinets and shelves need to be thought of cleverly. The situation is often tricky in small or irregularly shaped bathrooms. The things you select need to be functional while being aesthetically appealing.Bathroom furniture also needs to be of good quality as it will need to withstand humidity. If space is a problem, you can always go for recessed cabinets.

If the bathroom doesn’t receive adequate natural light, you must install additional lighting as needed. A dimly-lit bathroom is dangerous. Lighting fixed over the mirror will cast a shadow on your face. Use a wall fixture besides the mirror to illuminate your face. You can find wall scones in various designs to suit the overall theme of your bathroom.

If you want a bathtub in your bathroom, look for all the options available. Don’t buy one blindly. Purchase a size that is perfect considering the available space in your bathroom. Bathtubs come in several materials too. Choose one that is long lasting, such as acrylic or enameled cast iron.

Make your bathroom look bigger by creating a walk-in shower instead of an enclosed one.An enclosed glass shower will also need to be cleaned regularly to keep it free of spots. By eliminating it altogether, you don’t have to worry about cleaning your glass shower screen.

If you have a monochrome bathroom and want to spruce it up, add splashes of bright and bold colors in the form of rugs; towels; and colorful bottles of perfumes, lotions and creams.

Windows

A good bathroom needs to have the right ventilation. While an exhaust fan may suffice, having windows will allow natural light to stream in and make the bathroom appear spacious. If you have a very small window currently, maximize its size if it is possible.

For windows that need to be covered up due to privacy concerns, you can use café curtains. They will cover up the lower half of the windows while allowing in sunlight from the upper half. Curtains won’t be necessary if the windows are positioned high up.

You can also opt to cover the windows with blinds. They will allow light to filter in and also obscure view from the outside. They are easy to clean as well.

You can choose to install glass blocks instead of window panes. An entire wall of glass blocks will also look beautiful. With glass blocks, you get abundant natural light without having to worry about privacy as one cannot see through them. You can also consider getting a skylight installed.

Make sure your windows are easy to operate and free of rot. If your window trims are exposed to condensation and have mold growing on them, you need to act on it right away. PVC or aluminum cladding will work best in a humid environment such as the bathroom.

You also need quality glass panes with higher efficiency to reduce condensation. Getting in touch with a specialist on home windows in Reno will ensure you get the best window treatment for your bathroom.
