06-29-2009 01:13 PM by Todd Thomas | 6 comments »

For the last 8 months I have been remodeling/building a home for us to live in, the old ”this is our last house” deal….I bought this house to fix up and flip BUT on the way to filling almost 3 dumpsters with trash and debris my wife said that this house felt like home and she loved the yard and location, our lot backs up to a green belt area, woods and it is at the 2nd highest elevation in town and we can see the mountains in the winters. I am by no means an expert/mast...

Part 2: And the walls come down

07-01-2009 03:45 AM by Todd Thomas | 3 comments »

After the clean up we put 2 heavy coats of Dry-Loc on all the basement walls, there were signs of water but I think most of that was due to not having any gutters on the house and the grade slants towards the house….. After that we took all the walls down and had one big 1650 sq ft room up stairs with a matching 1650 room downstairs….the old houses here in Oak Ridge do not have any bearing walls, so you can move them anywhere you want and the great thing is that the hardwood fl...

Part 3: Up and Down....

07-03-2009 02:16 AM by Todd Thomas | 8 comments »

Well one of the first things we needed to do was decide where we wanted the stairwell, now this house had a full walkout basement put on it years ago and the laundry area was in the basement,,,,they walked around the house to get in and than later on they cut a hole in the floor with a ladder….........now you wouldn’t think a stairwell would take up so much room…......we designed the stairs to go about 2/3rds the way and have a landing and cut back the rest of the way down. ...

Part 5: A funny thing happened on the way to putting a new french door in....

02-21-2010 05:14 AM by Todd Thomas | 3 comments »

Ok so I’m working on getting a new french door built, I got 2 free wood 1 light doors that I was going to make a new french door out of going to the porch/covered deck on the back of the house. Reason being was the old door was a 4 ft door and we wanted a 6 foot door…anyway I decided to cut most of the wall out in that area and just rebuild it back…but when I cut the wall out it looked so good that I called Slim to come up to look at it and she had the idea of adding it as...

02-21-2010 06:07 AM by Todd Thomas | 12 comments »

Ok I guess you all figured it out…I got a new, iMac, computer this past week so I’m getting all caught up on my postings….Well we got the siding on…We are trying to style this house after a old craftsman bungalow…...we put hardie plank siding and hardie shakes on the gables and around the front door. we went with a old time looking window trim and Slim had me make some simple soffit brackets, I thought she just wanted them in the gables, but I was wrong :-) P...

Part 9: Floors.......problems?? what problems? I'm not sure what your talking about!! Part 1

09-01-2010 01:44 PM by Todd Thomas | 5 comments »

Warning: LOTS OF PICTURES Ok….here we go weeeeeeeeeeee….So I get a call from my wife ”you better come up here and look at these floors” I nicely told her just to get them clean enough for us to start sanding. She repeated ”get up here we have a problem” As you can see from the picture we had a problem. As she started to clean the floors she noticed that most of the flooring was separated, and not just a little bit :-( The house originally did not have ...

09-01-2010 01:54 PM by Todd Thomas | 2 comments »

We put 4 coats of WaterLox Tung Oil on them and they turned out great….well at least we think so…my wife says she feels like she is in an antique store the way our floors look…... The pictures don’t do the floor justice…it feels so warm with the tung oil on them. oh well…..on to the next project. (sorry for all the pictures we just think they do a better job telling the story)
