Ghost Doorbell Ringing Problem...

Hi All -

Attached is a video I made a couple of days ago showing my fun with a little doorbell project – we literally had the doorbell ringing every few days at dinnertime for no obvious reason. It was kind of funny in hindsight, really, as we all were starting to develop sort-of an anti-Pavlovian response: we were all starting to ignore the doorbell!

(And occasionally, there were real people out there who would be like… “Didn’t you hear me ringing?”)

In any case, if any of you might be experiencing a similar problem or just want to see what happened here – it was quite straight-forward to fix.

And there’s a longer article on my website with many photos as well (you can click right here) if you have further interest in more detail.

Hope any of you “afflicted” with a similar problem find this helpful!

@Mark Nice video. I was very helpful !

We had the same problem with our new house. Just imagine, we were just moved our home, in a old house, and at midnight some one rang on the bell. This strange thing happened 5 nights on a roll. I`m very superstitious, but my husband said that this is nonsense, so we search in internet and we found your video. So thanks again

Thanks for your note, Zoey – and it’s frankly so nice to hear this happened to someone else as well!

I hadn’t heard of this happening before either, and well, maybe I’m a little superstitious too… ;-)

Glad this helped!

I love that there is a scientific explanation for phantom door bells! Ghost removals would be a lot harder to deal with! Haha!

Are you shorting out half the cycles with the diode? that’s what it looks like.

okay, i looked up a wiring diagram. not sure how the chime works, but with the diode in place, its always getting DC power. When you close the circuit by pressing the doorbell, you bypass the diode. The chime then gets AC power momentarily. They must be using the AC to trigger the chime to start.

Based on the wiring diagram I found, you could NOT move the diode to the transformer unless you ran another wire from the transformer to the chime. Basically the chime is ALWAYS getting power. That’s how it continues to chime even after you stop pushing the button.

Haha! Thats funny.. Ya midnight paranormal knock knock/ring ring ginger! That would be creepy.. I do plumbing service brandon mb and I have actually come across this one time at a home i was doing a job. Their doorbell had a similar issue and I was there by myself, the owner was in back yard and i guess he forgot to mention it. But it was funny, it rang a couple times and I’d go to the door thinking it was the customer but no one was there! It wasn;t at midnight though so it wasn’t too scary ha!
