Working as a Carpenter and Cabinet installer for a General Contractors firm in San Francisco, I rebuilded this small guest house for a client in Palo Alto, CA. It’s a 12’ x 16’ small building at the back of the house, was in very bad shape when we received the project; old redwood framing, redwood shingles at roof and siding and cracked foundations. The city codes allowed to rebuild the building without demolishig it, and preserving 50% of the original structure. A concrete subcontractor raised the entire structure and made a new concrete slab. The framing was retrofitted, and everything else was brand new. Small bathroom and kitchenette was installed as well.

A nice guest house like that makes me think… If I build a guest house and no “main” house, do I still have to pay taxes ;)

Good use of space without looking cramped. Nice job.

Thanks all for the commments. Rat, I’d say a place like this is around thousand bucks, a few blocks from downtown Palo Alto.
