This is an older project, late summer and fall of 2005.
The deck is 68 feet long plus steps off both ends. The center of the deck area is 16 feet deep by 16 across. The next 8 feet in each direction tapers back toward the house at 45 degrees then continues the length of the house at 8 feet of depth.
The only reason the deck is this big is fire escape routes and anything smaller would look like spaghetti along this long of a run. The deck sits over a 1200sq foot concrete patio below. Another project of if I don’t do it as big as I want, I’ll regret it for years to come. I filled the space from wing wall to wing wall 20 feet out from the house.
All the material is common dimension treated lumber. I shaped all the rail posts, balusters and stringers. The decking is 2×6 treated. The rail posts are 4×4 chamfered on all edges and dadoed to accept the rail cap from both sides. This was to give a clean line and help prevent twisting of the rail cap.
A word of warning, treated lumber should be allowed to dry before use if at all possible. I had 16 foot deck boards shrink almost an inch in length, not width. That was frustrating, watching fitted butt joints open up and form an ugly gap.
All comments and critiques are welcome. I try to find the time to post the garage and front covered porches some other time. Thanks for looking, BTKS

Very nice deck. I really like the top rail cutout to the post. Nice joinery. I also like how the railing coming off of the steps follows two lines – very nice. Great job.

Wow that’s nice work. You state that this is an older project, would love to see some updated photos of how it’s progressed since 2005.
