Total kitchen makeover

Well we finally took the plunge and decided to do a complete overhaul of our outdated kitchen. My wife Sheila and I went to HD and used their free kitchen design service to come up with a new layout. After many iterations we finally came up with our new layout. We purchased our American Woodmark Maple all plywood construction cabinets through HD and waited for delivery. Just before they were delivered I rented a 30 yard dumpster and started demolition. I ripped out everything in the kitchen down to the bare walls including the oak wood flooring. My son and law Dan is an electrician and is very good with his hands. Together we completely rewired the kitchen with new circuits. Relocated the appliance wiring to accomodate its new locations and added all new ceiling light fixtures complete with dimmer switches. It took a couple of weeks to install all the cabinets and island. I did hire professionals to do the granite countertops, the tile floor, and the crown molding and details above the cabinets. The rest of the work of painting, installing light fixtures, all the side and end panels, the drawer and door hardware I did myself. It still isn’t 100% done but is geting close.

Great job, Ed!

Isn’t it great when you make things work within the resources of family and friends?
And think of all the money you save.

I just love looking at newly refurbished rooms in the house. It’s so lovely to see all the nice and shiny new things! And the smell of fresh paint and woodwork is incredible too!

It is never easy coming up with a new layout that is instantly to our liking. Thus, it is important to first list down various ideas before finally deciding on the one design that everybody is in love with. Else, it could be too late to turn back once works have commenced.
