door hinge routing jig

this is a door hinge routing jig i designed and build many years ago to get more precise alignment of the hinge pockets. the door and jamb are clamped into the jig at the same time and routed in one single operation wich gives me a perfect fit every time.the router i use is a inexpensive trimmer with a extended base plate and a short 1/2” mortising bit with a top bearing and collar (see pics)
for 5/8” radius hinges wich are becoming more common again i use a short 1 1/4” with 1/2” shaft bit with a top bearing and a larger router because of the bit size and weight !
check the CMT USA web site for the bits ! i assemble the hinges on to the jamb using the jig as a work table then remove the jig and screw the hinges to the door. i also mark the top hinge pockets for later reference as painters can never remember wich door goes where.
the advantages to this jig are :
route all hinge pockets in one set up (door and jamb)more precise fit
speed ( one setup for door and jamb)
no nail holes left by other jigs ( everything is clamped )
no guide bushings for the router
cost of jig is minimal versus $200.00 and up
this jig design can be used in other applications like box hinges etc.
