Removable Fence Section for Backyard Access

I’ve always found it practical to have access from the driveway directly into the backyard; it’s come in handy so many times, but I really want it to look nice too. The photos above depict my construction of a removable fence area along with a custom gate which, in total, span about thirteen feet across the top of the driveway. This is wide enough for a concrete truck to pass through with no problem.

The project took the better part of a full weekend to complete – and central to the design is a removable post using the sleeve shown in the first photo. This is set in concrete, and the wooden post is then bolted above for ease of removal when necessary.

The removable fence section is built in a very custom fashion (the picket spacing was tricky), and the ~8-foot span is lag-screwed to the posts, again, for ease of removal. The remaining section is filled with a custom-constructed gate, wide enough for the lawn mower to pass through, and also accommodating the grade of the driveway.

What was really fun about this project was that a) it warranted very careful planning and precise construction which I really enjoy, and b) when done right, it just looks like a plain-old fence when finished. But the reality is that in about 15 minutes, I can break the whole thing down and drive my truck into the yard… which, I have to admit, I think is cool! :-)

I have all the design and construction details summarized on my web site if anyone cares to read further at http://www.all-about-the-house.com/removable-wood-fence-section-and-gate/. It’s a bit-of-a-read there with much more detail, but if you’re considering something similar – you might find it helpful. And if you have any comments/suggestions – they would most certainly be welcome. Thanks for reading!
