Refurbished Staircase

I have been updating our house over the past five years and finally tackled the staircase. The old handrail was very loose and wobbled with the slightest touch. The finish was very warn also. I liked the look of the volute but I wanted to build a newel post that would more closely match the design of the mantel across the room. I also wanted more of a craftsman style. I probably made them a little too big but I wanted them to be a focal point and they are the same size as the vertical posts on the mantel. I built the newel posts out of quarter sawn red oak. I was able to salvage the existing hand rail and refinished and cut it to fit the new layout. Probably the biggest pain was sanding and painting the staircase (I hate painting). The new ballusters were a cinch to install. It was a fun project and I definitely learned a lot. I have included a pic of what it looked like before.

I think the posts are just the right size. I’ve seen smaller ones and they don’t convey the sturdy look (even if they are). Very nice work and attention to detail. Good job.

Love the large newels. It really modernized it and brought the entire stair case from the stairs in the house to a work of art. Looks like it turned out very well. Pat yourself on the back for this one.
