Laundry/Utility room remodel

Began this project Presidents weekend after thinking about what to do for a couple of years. Finally kicked it off by buying the cabinets on sale that weekend and there was no stopping after that. Just needed to redo the whole room to make it more usable. The closet was a nice idea the builder put in but it made you feel squeezed as you walked by and just collected junk. And the door that was there just always got in the way and made it awkward to access the closet. Cabinets were purchased from a local company that sells them ready to assemble. Saved $$$ by picking them up and assembling them ourselves. Perfect for a utility room, almost look better than my kitchen cabinets. Couldn’t install the pocket door in the existing door frame due to a light switch and furnace return in the wall. I just built the new framing adjacent to the existing studs which ends up making the one jamb about 8 inches wide but it really doesn’t look all the strange. Huge improvement over the swing door that was there and makes the room seem so much larger. Existing vinyl floor was ripped up. Ripped up is a misnomer since it wasn’t attached at all. It was held down around the edges by the quarter round molding. So the less then stellar job by the builder was fortunate for me and made for an easy demo. The tile floor, counter top and backsplash were all straight forward installs. Cabinets were no problem to install. Trickiest was the pocket door. I had to dry fit the frame first to make sure everything was square and then partly assemble it away from the wall. Final installation of the frame was done in pieces but after that it was just normal drywall and taping. My wife and I both worked on this and we’re really proud of the way it finished up. Plus Habitat for Humanity got the two doors and utility sink that were removed.
