Topic tags/keywords: siding vinyl shop building improvements

The hardy board on my backyard shop is beginning to disintegrate in a number of places so it is time to replace all the siding. The building is a simply 12×20 building on skids with one door, two side vents and 2 small windows. I am thinking of replacing the hardyboard with vinyl siding. Any pros and cons to this choice? Any tips as to installation? Youtube has been helpful, but would like to hear from those that have done it themselves.

Thanks in advance.

Eric

Hi Eric. I’d suggest solid color siding(same color the whole way thru) instead of surface color. That way scrapes don’t show. If you want a vertical look, (like t-11) buy soffit instead of siding. Make sure you have solid surfaces to nail to. I also prefer twist shank nails. They seem to go in easier in old wood. Make sure your corners are set plumb and your channels will fit well at the windows and top ( they make different depth channels). They make vinyl vents that you can install right over many other vents so you don’t have to cut and channel around them if you don’t want to. Avoid pieces less then approx. 20’’, even if you have to trim a full piece so you end with a larger small piece. And keep the pieces staggered away from each other on the wall for the best look. Don’t nail too tight. Nail the siding against the building but not tight, the vinyl is supposed to expand in the heat and slide in the channel at the nail head, not buckle where a nail is. If you have any questions, ask, I’ll try and answer. Rich

Very interesting blog. A lot of blogs I see these days don’t really provide anything that I’m interested in, but I’m most definitely interested in this one. Just thought that I would post and let you know.
