How does one determine where to put the starter strip when applying vinyl siding? Is it a matter of dividing the height of a piece of siding into the overall height of the structure and putting the strip on that mark.

When I put my siding up, I used a three inch board repeat so that I did not have to work it to an even siding board, just to an even repeat, and cut off the extra three inches. there was an inexpensive hand tool that punched through the siding to create tabs that would go into the top strip with the tabs holdiing the siding.

I was very careful to get the starter strip on exactly level. It made everything else fall into place. I’ve seen others fight every board to try to fix a bad start, and they still end up with a poor job.
