Topic tags/keywords: ceiling concrete cement precast plank block insulation insulating garage question workshop fasteners finishing remodeling

I am in the process of converting a garage with a cinder block walls and a precast cement ceiling. I am looking for advice for insulating and finishing the ceiling. The height is only 7’ so I don’t want to add too much thickness.

I have seen recommendations for THERMAX panels secured in a number of different ways, firing strips attached with anchors with foam in between, carpet squares, whatever.

The main purpose of the insulation will be to keep the Minnesota winter from battling my new unit heater. It also needs to look good so I’ll need to put up drywall or panels.

Has anyone had experience doing this kind of thing (good or bad) that will help me decide what to do?

Thanks a ton,
Greg

When I lived in Northwestern PA, we often utilized block walls in garages. Insulation was done several ways. I have found the best, when dealing with thickness issues, to be furring strips with insulated wallboard’s between. They are called R-Max boards and usually have a decent r value. Don’t discount the r value of a block wall itself. When you add these 2 together, plus whatever you put over the insulation to make a “finished” space, your r value will be fairly good. I would consider the 1” r-max sheets, or something similar.

If you are not going to drywall, are you going to put up plywood or particle board for your walls? That helps with the insulation, too.
