I have used Frog tape before on a relatively new painted surface. It is really good tape but it will peel off the paint if it is not totally cured. I believe it takes 28-30 days for paint to be cured enough to be able to safely use Frog tape.

One of a car painters old tricks is to take regular masking tape and roll a strip off. Then take it and place the sticky side on your denim pants. Then pull the tape up. The tape will bring up some of the fibers of the denim and it will be less sticky. It works similar to the blue tape. You could experiment with it to see if it would so what you want.

Use a paint shield instead of tape. Wipe it clean as you go to prevent any build up from transferring to the surface you are trying to protect.
