Topic tags/keywords: question hallway entryway

So I have been trying to figure out why my front porch light works only intermenttently. I traced the source to the switch box. The single pole switch is getting its power off of a three pole switch that controls the hallway lights right inside. So only when I switch the hallway lights on or off in the correct way does power actually get provided to the single pole switch. Is there any way to wire this so that power is always provided to the single pole switch?

Ok…..here is what I would do to fix it….but I must tell you I do my own electrical work BUT I am NOT an electrician…I would jump the power coming in to your hallway switch before it gets to the switch, if you can or see if you can put a junction box on a different run and get a power line that way.

Someone else may have a better way, this is just the way I would know how to do it.
or you could always call an electrician, but what fun is that :-)

Taylormade, Todd is on the right track. You need a separate power source for your porch light. You may have to pull a separate wire into the three way switch box to feed the porch if the hot lead in the three way is coming from the other three way switch box at the other end of the circuit.(huh??):-) Well any way, careful examination is needed to decide the proper course of action.
