Hanging a door

Hey Bob,
You say it’s an exterior garage door to the back yard. So there are several things to consider.
First of all, do you HAVE to use a door that isn’t already pre hung? What is the condition of the threshold?
is there drywall inside the garage?
Sounds like this will be a first time hanging a door. Unless you are up for a challenge and have nothing better to do for the next 8 hrs., I would highly recommend you go to the Big Box and get a Pre Hung, Metal door with a new tight threshold, CNC cut and installed new hardware, magnetic weather stripping, and new brick mold. Hinges are a bitch to get right without jigs. There are too many pre existing conditions to deal with.
With a new door, 1-2 hr. install and it’s perfect. No call backs.

If this was a really nice solid Oak door for the front of the house, It would be worth the effort.

A pre hung, 2 panel 1/2 window door for 179.00 would be real nice. That’s what I have.
Build some adirondack chairs or a blue martin house. Much more fun.

Thanks for your response. My friend really wants to use the old door. I agree with you that a pre hung door is much easier to install. I installed seven interior doors in my house. You are also right…the first door took me 6-7 hours to get installed to my satisfaction. YUK! I got better with each door…down to 1-2 hours. A pro would really get a good laugh at that, but I was determined to do it.

The house is Southern California track housing, built on a concrete foundation with no basement. The garage door opens up to a concrete 3’x3’ step. The threshold, if I recall correctly, is mounted into the concrete, and I believe is in fair condition (personally I would replace it). There is no drywall damage.
Setting the door hinges is a big challenge without a jig. Any suggestions?

This is not recommended solution since the size of the both are different which will make a difficult for door to be lock out when required.
