Topic tags/keywords: question outdoor space framing

I am adding a deck and shade structure to the back of my house. One of the supports for the shade structure needs to be attached to the exterior brick on the fireplace. I need to know if I can just drill a couple of holes and attach a 2×8 to the brick and use a joist hanger. From there the support will come out ~ 14 feet to a post. sitting on top of these supports will be a frame of 2×6’s to create a place to attach shade fabric. There will be little weight on the fireplace side. What do you all think of doing this?

you will need more than “a couple of holes” into the house structure even if only for the shared load of the lumber, shade cover and snow load if applicable. you should always try and lag screw into the structure behind the brick. specifically the floor joists. you can also set a post at the wall onto a proper footing twice the width of the post and deep as the frost line in your area.

dan,
i would prefer to not drill into chimney area because we in the northeast worry about water getting into the joints and freeze/thaw damage. you also run a risk of cracking your internal flue stack (assuming it is a clay flue not stainless). so that being said, you could roll the dice with a ledger, or set a post on a footing. Of course you could also set a sky-hook which works pretty good ;)
good luck with what ever you choose

Allmyfingers has the right idea in the last post. It is normally recommended you attach nothing to the chimney. We used to see TV antennas and now satellite dishes attached to chimneys but this should be discouraged. A chimney is not something to attach anything to.
