Reading the code and drawing up the plans for my shop, I thought this was going to be fairly easy: Framing requires standard 3” nails, siding 2” nails (although I’ve got a little question about that, given that between siding and furring strips in building a drainage plane takes up at least 1½”). So, I’m now looking around at framing nailers. I’m normally averse to buying Harbor Freight anything, but my Dad has had great luck with an HF flooring nailer after his $450 Porter Cable broke and the Harbor Freight one was cheaper than repairing the PC. There’s a Senco nailer in my local Craigslist for $125, I’m not sure which version, the 502 is available on Amazon for $150, the 602 is $230 or so. Reviews on the former complain about the lack of depth control, on the latter the difficulty in dealing with jams and the magazine is easily bent. So: I’m normally a Festool guy, however in this case I’m not likely to use a framing nailer after my shop is built. I’m going to need to frame, apply sheathing and siding (HardiPlank or equivalent) and roof sheathing (not shingles, I’m doing a living roof so will have alternate other roof materials). What should I be considering in purchasing a framing nailer for building one structure? -- Dan Lyke, Petaluma California, http://www.flutterby.net/ |
