Topic tags/keywords: breaker box

My daughter just moved into an older home. They can’t find a breaker box anywhere. Is this possible? Is it legal? They live in Austin Texas.

Thanks for your input!

No, this is highly unlikely and while I would not say it is impossible I just don’t see this happening. How old is the house and is it in a rural setting or inside a town? Start with the service coming into the house. Where is the meter. often times the breakers or fuses are located near the meter. It takes a large special wire to bring the power into the panel from the meter so this is usually a short distance. The panel can be exterior as well as an interior model.Trace that line from the meter a few feet and and you will usually find the panel. If this is an older home it could be a fuse panel. It could be several panels. This is usually not a good thing but it is done and it meets code. The reason I asked about a rural setting, the meter is sometimes on a pole in the yard of those old farm houses. The panel could be out there but again that is unlikely because then you would have to run several lines to the house from there (one for each breaker). Check inside and outside where the service comes into the house and I think you will find the panel. It could be under or behind something. Sometimes in a cabinet. People do the craziest things.

Thanks, I will forward this message to my daughter so she can check it all out! You are so kind to have helped! I’ll post when (and if) she finds the breaker box/panel. Thanks again! Viv

They found the breaker box outside the house! It is rural by the way so it was among some trees. Thanks again for your help! Viv
