My wife and I walked through 3 homes today. Our top choice had a strange double foundation wall only on the east side. The only way we knew this was due to a basement window. From the inside the “inner” concrete wall had an opening cut to allow light to come in from the window in the outer wall. I was able to see about a 18-24 inch void between the walls to the left and right. I could not look down over the inner wall. There was a horizontal surface of concrete approximately the height of the bottom of the window that bridged the gap horizontally between the walls.

What do you suppose this is all about?

I’m assuming the second wall came up to a new set of top plates. Were you able to go into the basement? You say concrete – were both walls poured or was the second one block?

More then likely, I would suspect the original foundation was beyond repair or unable to underpin and they built a secondary wall w/foundation.

The house was constructed in 2002. I hope the original foundation isn’t shot yet! I pretty sure both were poured. I KNOW the inner wall was concrete. I remember noticing the rock embedded in the concrete where the wall was clearly cut for the window in the outer wall.

I know a contractor that read the plans incorrectly and had to break a slab floor off on the side and extend it 2 more feet. Maybe they poured the first foundation and discovered a mistake and added the second to make the house the correct size?????

I’d have to go with Grandpa on this one.

Being relatively new, I would go to city hall and check with the building permit dept or the inspector. I’m sure someone around there would remember a mistake like that.

That would be one costly mistake for the contractor!
