I need to drill a hole for a new vent fan in a bathroom. It’s an older house with double brick construction. I have done others with good success. In this case the most obvious place to put the vent pipe is above the window but it would go through the arched soldier course of bricks above the window. Do any of the masons in the group anticipate any problems with this?

Can you post a pic from outside?
I would say do not cut into the arch. That is what is supporting the brick above it.

Hey Gary,

Yeah, I figured so, that’s why I asked, Need a 4” diameter hole and it’s the perfect spot right in the middle of the bathroom between the joists. Here it is.

If this is the only possible location, you could cut your hole through big enough to fit a piece of Sch.40 4” pvc and them tuck point it from both sides all the way to the center so the pvc is then sharing the load dispersal. Your tuck pointing needs to be solid and complete. Any voids may lead to movement and cracks. Use a grout bag and a tuck point tool to really fill it up.
Try as much as possible to minimize the damage to the brick. I’ve drilled brick, block, and concrete with success by drilling a series of 3/8 holes in the diameter needed and chipping it out. Unless you have a 4 1/2” boring bit…..

Thanks Gary, Great idea using the rigid pipe. I’ll poke around in the ceiling first to see if there is a better spot before I proceed. Cheers.

Two layers of brick has me thinking that you could easily loosen bricks as you chip and drill .You did say old house .I was thinking maybe you should drill a few hole and fill the void between the bricks with spray foam .after it harden it will help keep the brick you do want getting loose from falling out . Seems like you can by low grade diamond bits these day days ,like from this place http://www.mcgillswarehouse.com/c/183/drills-driill-bits
