I promised a little tutorial for throw pillows but never got around to it. All the pictures were still on my phone so here goes.

These are called knife edged throw pillows.

To cut the throw pillows you need a square, a yardstick, scissors, and plain white chalk.

Use the square and yardstick to mark out some squares on your fabric. 16 by 16 squares will make a smallish throw pillow. 20 by 20 will make you a nice head rest pillow and 24 by 24 will become a back cushion.

You don’t want to keep the edge of the fabric. Make sure you don’t include it in your fabric squares.

Since you are going to cut small squares out of each corner, you may as well mark them up before actually cutting any fabric. It takes a lot less time to mark the corners in advance. In addition, 1.5 inches to a very thick 2.5 inches is what you want to shoot for. The bigger the corner cut out, the fatter the pillow. The fat pillows take a lot of stuffing. Be prepared for that.

Another thing to consider at this point are your overall dimensions. If want a 15 inch square pillow that is 5 inches thick, here is the quick math.

15 Finished square 1 For the half inch seam 5 for the two corner cutouts and 2.5 inches each.
= 21 inch square.

I’ll skip the cutting part and head us over to the sewing machine.

Start by sewing the edges together. Don’t sew the corner cutouts yet.

Remember that one edge needs to have at least a 6 inch opening so you can stuff the cushion. Every time you get to a corner or opening, run the machine in reverse to reinforce the stitches.

You can sew all four sides without stopping. You just clip the the joining thread when ready. You can see in my example that I had a bit of a problem after I clipped the thread joining the two corners. The green arrow shows where I reinforced the stitch. The blue arrow shows where my stitching came undone after I clipped the two edges apart. Don’t fear if this happens. Just make another pass with the sewing machine on that edge and remember to reinforce by backing up your stitches once or twice.

Now your ready to sew the corner cutouts. Align the edge seams together so the touch each other. Spread the excess edges open so they create less bulk. Flatten the whole thing out and put it under your sewing machine foot. If you are not sure you can do this part well on the first try, stitch over it without reinforcing. You can turn it inside out and inspect. If it looks good turn it inside out again and resew it with the reinforcing stitches. If it’s off, you can remove the seam easily and try again.

Here is what a finished knife edge corner will look like if everything matched up correctly.

Get to stuffing!! You can use crushed foam or poly fiber fill. A cheap 5$ pillow from walmart will do a little more than one cushion. If you have more than 6 cushions to fill, call an an upholstery supply store and buy a 10 pound bag of poly fiber fill for $30. That 10 pound bag will fill fill your entire trunk.

Aren’t you glad you left that opening on the bottom edge of the pillow?

A small curved needle and nylon thread is all you need to stitch it up. I recommend stitches of 1/4 inch or less.

If you like – you can add some welt to the edges.

You’ll have to change the order in which you do things.

First sew cutouts.
Add cording
Sew edges (Actually is just the entire perimeter)

Try the kind without cording first to get the hand of it.

Have Fun!!! That means you Deb!!!! I can’t see Billy knocking out a dozen throw pillows. ;)

Unquestionably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to be on the web the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks Red Boost
