I have a front door that is a steel skinned core door. The paint needed to be removed and replaced so out came the heat gun and the putty knife. I soon found that the core of the door was foam and that the heat gun was melting the foam making the door come apart! Back to the sanding method…

-- What do you mean I can't use a coat hanger for 12 ga wire?

Yea, steel cored door is kinda misleading isn’t it? You would think it is a steel door, but it is more like a steel sandwich instead. Maybe some paint stripper would work also, if the door is smooth.

The doors have a sort of thick plastic coating, almost a bonded sheeting. I have tried just about every chemical I could get my hands on. I ended up just sanding the best i could then putting think texured coats of primer then paint to help cover the inperfections.

That sounds like one of my tricks! Ever try to store lacquer thinner in a styrofoam cup?

I had to laugh at that one Dennis.I tried cleaning my brushes with paint thinner in a styro soup container.Oh ya what fun that was.All over the place.(lol)
