Any tips on getting the smell out of the house after a semi-major furnace oil leak in the basement?

The oil was cleaned up pretty quickly (good thing we hadn’t gone away last week) ... but the smell lingers on.

Spread baking soda on the floors. Leave it there for a while and then vacuum it all up. Does wonders for absorbing odors. You could also try spraying odo-ban into the air vents. The smell may have entered the ventilation system.

Thanks Beth.
I think they have the spill cleaned up.. some new product that you put on the floor and it draws up the oil and does some chemical change to it turning it into a sheet of plastic (kind of thing) and then you scrape it up.

I wondered about the air vents!! I’ll pass that along.

my furnace buys says that he has already sprayed in the ventilation system .. we’re thinking it is in the carpets even though I’ve cleaned them several times.

Cook a massive batch of brownies! But then that might just smell like oily brownies.

Maybe an ozone machine will help.

we think we have the remaining odour tracked down to the carpet in the hallway. I hate the carpet, especially in the hallway .. so I think it is just going to be ripped up. I will put down a floor runner in its place until I win the lottery and can instal actual flooring.

The furnace people are sending over an “odour expert” (clean-up guy) and we’ll see what he has to say.
