I live in a subdivision house that has a lousy wiring job that was done the quickest and cheapest way. I’m in the process of sectioning off a part of the basement/garage for a WW shop. I need a separate line for a light in what will be a storage area. The problem: The wiring to a particular switch and light is a single wire, with the white going to one pole on the switch and the black going to the other pole. I have tried a couple of ways to run a line off this switch/line but can’t. I wind up with two switches going to the one existing light. Both switches operate the existing light with no power going to the storage area light! FWIW, the ceiling is sheetrock so running a separate line from the box will be a pain in the posterior. The only way I see to run a light is to tap into a line I ran for running shop equipment so it doesn’t rip the breaker (the entire basement is on one breaker). Couldn’t run a shop vac and saw off the same circuit. Any help is appreciated.

I would take it that there is no solution to the problem except to tear out the sheetrock and rewire or tap into the new wiring I put in last year??????

Don’t underestimate the power of conduit… Yeah, I hate surface mounted stuff too, but at least that way you avoid the re-sheetrocking.

Dan, the problem is that the breaker box is in a straight line with the shop area and the house is a split foyer. The foyer is in direct line with the start and finish if I went with conduit. I don’t have a problem with conduit but the floor plan gets in the way. I should have mentioned that in the original post. I talked with an electrician I worked with at Lowe’s. He said there is no solution with the original wiring. Said the best would be to tap into the three wire line I ran last year for power tools; split off a line to the light. Originally, if I ran the tablesaw and the shop vac together, the breaker would trip. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestion.
