Spammers are just a pain – plain and simple. I know it is a “free advertisement” for them, but it does nothing for the site. This topic has been discussed many times at the LJ site, and many members have been weighed in on the topic. MsDebbieP does a fantastic job monitoring ALL of the sites, but there should be technical means of stopping most of the spamming (thus helping Debbie).

What about this:

1. Make it mandatory that a person must fill out the personal information, not just a “name.” Meaning, they must list their city and state, and tell a little about themselves and their remodeling/building experience.

2. Make it mandatory that the person posts at least one project that they are either currently working on or have completed. If a person is joining this site, they should be involved in some type of remodeling, refurbishing, building, or at least something that deals with the site. Even if they are new to this, they should be able to post something related to this topic.

3. Put a link on the posting that allows the person who’s blog / forum / project is being commented on the ability to “flag” as either inappropriate or as spam. That means each person can monitor their own site and take appropriate action.

4. I belong to several other sites and some of them have the ability for the person to review the post prior to it being public. That could serve many purposes, i.e., limit spam, avoid obscene postings, etc. Ultimately, each person would be responsible for monitoring their own site.

Does anyone else have a suggestion? Debbie – what are your thoughts?

the tech part … that’s Martin’s department.
I usually check the site twice a day and I don’t mind. I do miss the comments that are spams though and just need a private message to let me know who the spammer is.
If the site gets busier, the spammers will increase and then I may not be able to keep up.

Here’s my two cents (albiet a bit later than the rest of everyone).

Many other sites (youtube for example) have the thumbs thumbs down rating along with a ‘mark as spam’ tag along side someone’s comments on a video.

If the powers that be put a spam tag on a profiles home page and it receives enough votes then it is dumped as spam.

As far as thumbs up and thumbs down… Most every Refurber I have seen making comments is either offering encouraging words directly to another Refurber or high quality information based on their experience in the field. I would give thumbs up to many of the answers the Refurbers past to peoples questions just because I agree that they provide timely, relavent, knowledgable and helpful information to those who ask for help here.

If there was a thumbs down, then someone selecting that option should have to offer their opinion of why they think a post deserves a thumbs down, versus just giving thumbs down.

I suspect that something as simple as a “spam” tag on a users home page is enough for the Refurber’s community to monitor itself.

I hear you J. All great ideas. I hope the hosting site and software has the ability to make that happen.
